In the High School the work has been so arranged that there are two separate classes in freehand and two in mechanical drawing. Design has been made the most important branch of the freehand work and especial at- tention has been given to the theory of good design, and its industrial application. The cover for this report was designed by Lawrence B. Robbins.
It is not expected that each pupil will develop into an artist through his study of drawing, but it is expected that his eyes will be opened to the beauty of form and color in nature, that he will be able to combine the use- ful and the beautiful in common-place things, and above all, that he will gain in good impulses through his love and appreciation of beauty.
"We are shaped and fashioned by what we love."
Respectfully,
EDITH ATHENA BARBER.
REPORT OF THE TRUANT OFFICER.
Mr. William P. Kelly, Superintendent of Schools :
I find that there is a greater desire on the part of the children to attend school in the past year than in former years, but very few cases of truancy having occurred during the year. Five years ago quite a large per cent. of absence was from this cause at certain times in the year, especially in the spring. Last spring, however, there was a marked improvement over former years. The plans adopted by, the Superintendent and carried out by the teachers have improved greatly the regular attendance and lessened tardiness.

ANNUAL REPORT.
CONCLUSION.
The year just closed has been noteworthy for the high class of teachers employed, the improvement in the scholarship of the grades as shown by the Superinten- dent's examinations, the further development of the evening schools, the extension of school influences throughout the long vacation, and the general feeling of satisfaction on the part of the patrons. There has been cordial feeling among all the many people who labor to maintain the schools, and much earnest effort to give the children of Attleborough the best education possible for the money, and not to waste a cent of the liberal appropriations.
Respectfully, WILLIAM P. KELLY.
