An effort is now making to place the Library on a permanent basis, and during the com- ing three years the present secured subscriptions, $3000 in amount, will become due, and liberal aid is expected in the way of additional sub- scriptions. The public interest in the prosperity of the institution is in- creasing, and bids fair to place it on a substantial footing. The Reading Room, connected with the Library, is to be fitted up in a more attractive manner, making it a place of favorite resort.

PLACES OF INTEREST TO VISITORS.

PLACES WORTHY OF NOTICE FROM STRANGERS VISITING SPRINGFIELD.

THE CITY HALL, fronting Court Square, erected at an expense of $100,000, ranks among the finest buildings in New England. Grand and substantial in external appearance, roomy, and elegantly finished inter- nally, furnishing accommodations for all city offices, Police Court and City Library, with a magnificent Hall overhead, it will stand for coming years, a proud monument of the taste, liberality and enterprise of the . present day and generation.

THE CEMETERY .- In natural advantages of location and scenery, combining great variety of hill and dale, its water courses ever running noiselessly onward, like the stream of human life, it is excelled by no cemetery in the country. Reclaimed from its natural wildness, and im- proved by the hand of art, it must long remain, " rich with the spoils of time," the cherished spot of buried memories and blighted hopes; ever reminding the living that " we all do fade as a leaf," and "man goeth to his long home." The Cemetery grounds cover an extent of nearly forty acres, and from their opening in June, 1841, to May, 1859, 4,548 inter- ments have been made in them. The whole amount realized from sub- scriptions and sale of lots, during that period, amounts to $22,470."

THE ARMORY is too well known for its claims to pass unheeded. Visitors can but admire the beautiful view of the city from the top of the tower of the Arsenal; the admirable arrangement for storage of muskets in the same building; the great improvements in machinery, almost per- fect, the growth of late years, for the manufacture of arms; the new dam and appurtenances at the Water Shops, and internal arrangements of the work shop recently erected there.

HAMPDEN PARK-Inaugurated September 29, 1857. Purchased and improved by the Hampden County Agricultural Society, at a cost of $31,600, for an exhibition ground; " the finest and most convenient lo- cation the Society could have fixed upon, and unsurpassed for beauty and fitness by any lot devoted to a similar purpose, in the world." These grounds, sixty acres in extent, enclosed on the river side by a costly levee ("more than four-fifths of a mile in length, from three to six feet high, and six feet wide at the top, well covered with turf"), on the other sides by a substantial fence, contain a splendid barn, with stalls for cat- tle and horses, and extensive sheds in addition, devoted to a like pur- pose; a mile and also a half mile track, graded and kept in good condi- tion; a range of seats three hundred feet long; and judges' stand, taste- ful in appearance and permanent in construction.

Here are held the far-famed Springfield Horse Shows, the annual Cattle Shows of the Coun- ty Society, and also the newly inaugurated Market Fairs. In the open- ing address of Mr. George Bliss, he says: "It is peculiarly fitting that this particular spot should be thus appropriated. This tract of meadow land, bounded on three sides by the river, the End brook and upland, has, from the earliest settlement of the town, been known as the 'three- cornered meadow,' and the largest portion of it was the first lot of land granted by the earliest settlers, within the first month after their arrival."

GREAT FRESHETS-Highest Rise of Water in Connecticut River- 1801, twenty-one feet six inches; 1843, April 18, twenty feet eight inch- es; 1854, May 1, twenty-two feet four inches; 1856, Aug. 21, eighteen feet nine inches (Camp Thompson inundated); 1859, March 20, twenty feet six inches. The three last are taken from Mr. Butler's record at the Bridge.
