PREFACE.

PREFACE.

The need of a yearly city directory in Beverly has, we think, been clearly demonstrated by the call for the first volume (1903) ; which exceeded the supply printed. It is also conclusively shown by a glance at the table below showing the number of new names, corrections and erasures since one year ago. The publishers particularly request an examination of the advertising pages in this issue for evidence of the advance of Beverly's business interests. As in 1903, we have spared no expense to obtain the most reliable information and to present it in a ready form for reference. Beverly business men have supported the book most liberally and the extra copies issued this year are given them for distribution, as it is believed that is the most direct way to insure placing these copies in the right hands.

The new map which is furnished with the directory provides special information in regard to the location of the summer residences of the North Shore as far as the Gloucester line and also in Hamilton and Wenham. The map has been carefully compiled and many corrections and additions have been made. It will be found to be accurate in all essential details. The key and map will be corrected each year as changes take place in Shore property and in the streets and avenues of the district. The city addresses of summer residents have been obtained by personal letters and are thoroughly reliable. For removals and names received too late for regular classi- fication see page opp. 100.

Our thanks are tendered to all who have furnished information and especially to our numerous subscribers and advertising patrons.

STREET AND HOUSE DIRECTORY

Giving the location of the streets, places, parks, squares, etc. and showing what other streets and places run from them or across them, with the point at which they inter- sect. * The system adopted for numbering the streets of the city is, that a person starting at the beginning of any street, and following along with the numbers, every even number will be on the left hand and every odd number on the right hand, with the names of heads of families and persons in business, in the order of location.

Houses without numbers are indicated by a -, and the dash is also used opposite connecting streets to indicate whether such streets begin or end on the left or right side.

Where there is more than one family in a house, the down stair name is given first

*Judson street, Budleigh and Laurel avenues are numbered by the opposite system. avenue by consecutive numbers.
