History
EARLY HISTORY OF THE FIRST CHURCH AND THE TOWN
Earliest History records before Europeans came to this Coun- try: Agawam reached from Merrimac River on the north to Naumkeag River, now of Salem, on the south; from Cochichawick, afterwards Andover, on the west, and to the sea-side on the east. "Captain (John) Smith made out a draught of this Country in 1614." Colonial Records state: "1634, Aug. 4th. Agawam is called Ipswich, being a town in England in acknowledgment of the great honor and kindness done to our people who took shipping there." "March, 1633. John Winthrop Jr. and twelve others commenced a settlement here." "March 13th, 1638. Masconnomet sells his fee in the soil of Ipswich to John Winthrop Jr. in behalf of its inhabi- tants for £20." In the early days Hamilton was known as Ipswich Hamlet. History does not record when the earliest settlement was made, but land within its limits was granted to Matthew Whipple in 1638. The old road was laid through the Whipple land in 1641. Mention is made of John Annable, tailor, buying a house of Mat- thew Whipple in 1647.
In the early records of most New England towns much of the history centered around the church. Hamilton was no exception to this rule. History describes the people of the Hamlet as "sev- eral of better rank, members of the church, persons of public places and service as well or better landed than any."
In 1712 the people of the Hamlet were finding it difficult to attend the mother church in Ipswich, as it was too distant, and the Wenham church was not large enough to accommodate the people from the Hamlet in addition to their own number. This led to a petition being presented to the first parish by sixty-five males, asking to be set off from that parish. The petition was granted, "provided a meeting house be erected and an orthodox minister called."
The church was built in 1713 and organized in 1714, with 58 members. It became the Third Parish of Ipswich until Hamilton became incorporated as a Town, June 21st, 1793, then it became the First Congregational Church.
The first minister called was the Rev. Samuel Wigglesworth, born Malden 1689, Harvard, 1707, died 1768. Previous to his be-

ing called to this pastorate he had studied medicine and practiced as a physician in the Hamlet for nearly a year. Later he studied Divinity and was called to Dracut and Groton, but evidently his acquaintance with the people of the Hamlet, from his work here as a physician, must have made a favorable impression on him, for when the church was organized he accepted the call. His pas- torate extended over a period of fifty-four years.
Mr. Wigglesworth's salary for the first year was 60 pounds, payable two-thirds in money and the rest in grain and 20 cords of wood. His settlement was 100 pounds toward building his house, and one acre and a half of land.
Mr. Wigglesworth's training enabled him to practice as a physician in addition to his pastoral duties. History speaks of him as a talented writer. The work and influence of this able man had much to do with the growth and prosperity of the Hamlet.
The house built for Mr. Wigglesworth more than two centuries ago still stands overlooking the "Old Bay Road." It is in a fine state of preservation and so few changes have been made that the charm and attractiveness of the architecture of the olden days clings to it and elicits the admiration of all lovers of colonial structures.
After the death of Mr. Wigglesworth in 1768, this house came into the possession of the second minister, Dr. Manasseh Cutler, by purchase. He leased a portion of the house to the widow of Mr. Wigglesworth for her natural life.
Following is a copy of the lease, written in the language of that day:
. This agreement made & executed this Eleventh Day of March One Thousand seven Hundred & seventy Two, between Manasseh Cutler of Ipswich in ye County of Essex, & Province of ye Massachusetts-Bay, Clerk, as Leasor, & Martha Wigglesworth of sd. Ipswich, Widow as Leasee; Witnesseth, that for & in con- sideration of ye sum of Two Pounds ten shillings & eight Pence, to be paid annually by ye sd. said Manasseh doth Covenant & agree, yt ye sd. Martha shall use & improve ye above sd. In witness whereof ye sd. Manasseh Cutler and Martha Wig- glesworth have here unto severlly and interchangably set yr hands and seals, the Day and year above sd.
In presence of us. FRANCIS QUARLES JR. DANIEL KILLAM, YE 3.
MANASSEH CUTLER. MARTHA WIGGLESWORTH."
THE INCORPORATION OF THE TOWN JANUARY 24TH, 1793.
"About this time a matter of particular interest to Dr. Cutler's parishioners claimed his attention and efforts. 'The people of the Hamlet conceiving themselves deprived of essential rights and privileges, to which they had a just claim, and that they were subjected to burdens and inconveniences which they ought not to bear,' were very desirous to be separated from Ipswich and to be formed into an independent town. To accomplish this purpose, they sought the aid of their pastor, to which they were accustomed to turn in every emergency. Accordingly, a committee, consisting of Dr. Cutler, Colonel Dodge, Mr. Giddings, and Mr. Lamson, were appointed to go to Boston and apply to the General Court for an Act of Incorporation of the parish. On the 5th of February, they met with a committee of the Court and stated their case. The town of Ipswich was actively opposed to the movement, and was ably represented in the Court. A month was spent in patient working and waiting before the committee from the Hamlet was assured that a report would be made in their favor, provided the
776
1958-THE PRICE & LEE CO.'S
parish should pay nine hundred pounds to Ipswich. To this they agreed, and the favorable report was made, but, the object was not yet attained, as the Court was still to act. At this juncture Dr. Cutler was recalled to his home, to meet and confer with General Putnam on Ohio Company affairs. After a few days, on his re- turn to Boston, he found that, during his absence, 'Choat contrived to have the report of the committee negatived in the Senate, and Heard did the same in the House; but Giddings had got it back into the House.' After much lobbying, long delays, and several conferences with the Agents of the town, they came to an agree- ment which was executed by Stephen Choat, John Heard, and Jonathan Cogswell, on the part of Ipswich, and M. Cutler, R. Dodge, Josh. Giddings, and Jonathan Lamson, on the part of the parish. On the 21st of June, more than four months after the ap- plication was made, the engrossed bill, for incorporating Ipswich Hamlet into a town by the name of Hamilton, passed the House of Representatives to be sent up to the Senate. Thus the struggel ended."
"1668." "Any person catching or killing a wolf within two and one-half miles of the Meeting House, shall have 40s. with what is already allowed by the Colony, which makes £4 ($20.00)."
"One of the first chaise in Ipswich was that of the Rev. Sam- uel Wigglesworth, about 1753."
"The Post Office was established in 1803, it produces to the government $24.00 per year, kept by Israel D. Brown."
"In 1835 there were two Public Houses, one near the meeting house designated by a sign post, a Portrait of Governor Hancock, kept by Israel D. Brown, the other near the Ipswich line, kept by Jacob Brown."
