WENHAM DIRECTORY-1958

History

Wenham was established as a town on September 7, 1643. The town was originally called "Enon" by Hugh Peter, but very early in its history the name was changed to Wenham, from Great Wenham and Little Wenham in Suffolk County, England, from which some of the early settlers in the region came. According to the record of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, "It is ordered that Enon shall be called Wenham. Wenham is granted to bee a towne."

The neighboring towns to Wenham are Hamilton on the north, Manchester to the east, Beverly to the south, Danvers on the southwest, and Topsfield on the northwest.

Wenham is in Essex County on Route 1A, between Beverly and Hamilton. It has an area of 81/2 square miles and a popula- tion of 2,400, an increase of 36 per cent since 1950. It is a town of homes, with few tenants, and is served by the Boston & Maine R. R. and the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway Company bus lines.

Wenham has an excellent school system, and good recreational facilities. Among its organizations and activities are the First Church, Congregational, with its Women's Guild, Men's Club and Couples' Club; the Baptist Church, with its Annie L. Prince Mis- sionary Society and Ladies' Aid Society; also the Lt. Norman Prince Post, American Legion, the Wenham Historical Association, the Boy and Girl Scouts, the College Club, Masonic Club, Firemen's Relief Association, Community Garden Club, and the Wenham and Lakeview Golf clubs.

The Wenham Village Improvement Society, with its Exchange and Tea House, furnishes employment and occupation to members of the community and devotes its earnings to the betterment of conditions throughout the town. On Town Meeting day it serves lunch to all voters.

The town is rich in historical background. Hand-written town records dating back to the town's incorporation in 1642 still exist. These records form a stairway between present-day and historical Wenham. In commemoration of the town's founding, the state has placed permanent iron markers, as one enters and leaves the town, on the old Bay Road. A third marker has been placed on the shores of Wenham Lake. The variety and number of stone im- plements found around this lake indicate that it was a favorite resort of the Indians.

1958-THE PRICE & LEE CO.'S

On the shores of the lake, Hugh Peter preached in 1638. Wen- ham Lake ice, noted abroad for its purity, was an important item of export in the 19th century. The first ice houses were on the site of Hugh Peter's monument on Wenham Lake. Today the lake is used as a source of water supply for the cities of Salem and Beverly.

Located in Wenham are four houses built before 1700. The Lowe-Pickering House, before 1680, was owned by Captain Trevitt, one of Washington's aides. He sold it to Colonel Pickering in 1806, when he retired to private life. He lived here until 1820, when the house was put in the hands of a tenant, who agreed to allow Colonel Pickering to use the house on week days during spring and summer and to participate in the care of the farm, an arrangement which continued until Colonel Pickering's death. The Lowe family purchased the property early in the nineteenth cen- tury, and continuously occupied it for about one hundred years. The Claflin-Richards House was built in 1664 by Robert Macclaff- lin. An original room of the house, showing ogee curved braces, the only example in New England, was unexpectedly found in 1925 when its 19th century interior was ripped out in the process of repairing. Today it is open for public viewing.

The Old Farm, built in 1689, is said to have been built by John Porter of Danvers for his son John. Successive deeds con- veyed the house and 40 acres to, finally, Mary B. Amory in 1933.

The Patch-Batchelder House was built about 1680 and is the residence of Mr. Henry A. Erhard.
