Boston has played a leading role in the nation's cultural growth. Referred to in another era as "the Athens of America," it certainly held undisputed claim to this title for many years. Here-and in neighboring Cam- bridge and Concord-lived and worked a colony of writers which gave to American letters a distinctive place in literature. Names like Emerson, Holmes, Longfellow, the Alcotts, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Aldrich, Lowell, Howells, James, Parkman and an imposing roster of others form a rich and substantial background for all A- merican writing that has come after them.

BOSTON . . . Transportation

Through the veins of Boston's transportation system flows a steady stream of traffic to meet the great and diversified requirements of New England and the important centers of the world.

Boston has every modern facility for the expeditious handling of transportation by air. land and sea. It has one of the great domestic and international airports in the United States, its seaport is equal, or superior to, any port on the Eastern Seaboard and its railroad service has been rated among the country's best. Three large railway systems, 108 foreign steamship services, 2 intercoastal steamship lines, 10 domestic air lines, 6 trans- Atlantic air lines and hundreds of highway transportation operators constitute the important and flexible trans- portation system of the Boston region.

Boston's Logan International Airport, located as it is within 15 minutes distance from the center of the business district, is one of the great skyports of the world. This great asset of accessibility and its unique op- portunity for expansion to meet any future needs make Boston's airport a leader in the nation.

In operation are 4 paved runways, the longest over 10,000 feet. These runways are so designed that each may be extended later if it proves necessary. Furthermore, each runway can be duplicated later by a parallel runway 1,500 feet removed. Sponsored originally in 1922 by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, the airport has been built on filled land on the edge of Boston Harbor. After 20 years of operation as a municipal airport by the City of Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts took over its operation in 1941.

The extensive enlargement operations recently completed at the airport cover an area of more than 2,000 acres. The long paved runways are now available to handle the large trans-Atlantic planes arriving and depart- ing at Boston. Two of Boston's famous historic landmarks-Governors Island and Apple Island-have been level- ed in this enlargement operation, thus bowing to civic progress. Ten scheduled air lines-American, Eastern, Flying Tiger, Northeast, Slick, Trans-Canada, Trans-World, United, Allegheny and Mohawk-are currently mak - ing well over 1,000 outbound domestic flights daily. Five trans-Atlantic air lines-Irish Airlines, British Over - seas, Pan-American, Trans-World Airways, and Italian Airlines-provide more than 100 trans-Atlantic out - bound flights at Logan each week. The Boston-New York route has been termed the heaviest traveled air route in the United States. In addition to the flights to Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, there is service to virtually all of the major cities in the United States and some Canadian cities. Boston's aviation network pro- vides service, through convenient connections, to all of the major markets in the world.

SEAPORT

Boston, with the finest natural harbor on the Atlantic Coast, equipped with modern piers, docks and ware- houses, ranks high among the major ports of the world. It is practically land-locked and from the open sea to the inner harbor the distance is only 8 miles. As a shipping point to commercial centers, Boston has a marked advantage over other American seaports. It lies 200 miles nearer Europe than New York, and 1,000 miles nearer Panama and the west coast of South America than San Francisco, and is nearer Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires than any other North Atlantic port. As compared with any other major Atlantic seaport, from 150 to 300 miles is saved by sailing from Boston to the ports of the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and the Near East. Passen- gers to or from Europe may save a day or more by embarking or debarking at Boston. Direct steamship service is maintained to and from the more important ports along the Pacific Coast and, generally speaking, through transportation applies via these lines with various connecting rail and truck lines serving the port cities.

The Port of Boston has several excellent waterfront terminal facilities. In South Boston there is Castle Island Terminal, with 4,200 feet of berthing space, and only one hour steaming time from the open sea; the huge Boston Army Base with its fully-enclosed pier shed nearly one mile long; Commonwealth Pier, over 35 years old and still described as the best passenger pier on the Atlantic Coast. Charlestown has the brand-new Mystic Pier No. 1, with 246,000 square feet of shed space and berthing space for 3 large vessels; the Boston & Maine piers Nos. 48, 49 and 50, which yearly handle thousands of tons of wood pulp and general cargo; and the new Hoosac Pier and grain elevator, with, among other features, the ability to load 30,000 bushels of grain per hour into waiting vessels. In East Boston the Boston & Albany Railroad operates 2 efficient finger-type piers; and the Port of Boston Commission has completed a modern terminal facility, such as was constructed at Mystic Pier No. 1, in Charlestown. A modernized grain elevator capable of delivering 30,000 bushels per hour is in service.

RAILROADS

Boston's railroad facilities, provided by the New York, New Haven & Hartford, the Boston & Albany and the Boston & Maine railroads, include numerous large piers on the waterfront, many freight houses strategically located with sidetrack facilities to handle thousands of cars at one time, team tracks for bulk freight deliveries permitting the placement of 3,000 cars at a time for loading and unloading, and large storage yards with capacity up to 13,000 cars to meet the demands of modern commerce and industry. Delivery yards are equipped with overhead electric cranes and special platforms to facilitate the loading and unloading of large units, such as automobiles, trucks, machinery and other heavy freight.

Boston has many electric railways and buses. The Metropolitan Transit Authority and the Eastern Massa- chusetts Street Railway Co. connect virtually every part of Metropolitan Boston. Boston's underground system, comprising about 12 miles of subway, was the first municipal subway to be built in the United States, and the second in the world.

Located as Boston is, in the extreme northeast section of the country, with not an overabundance of raw materials, the city and New England lean heavily upon their efficient railroad, seaport, highway and air services for the continuous import of raw materials and the export of finished products to keep the supply lines of this important area open for world commerce.

CENTRAL BOSTON - PUBLIC GARDEN.

BOSTON . . . Convention City

Two hundred thousand conventioneers spending upwards of $25,000,000 annually comprise one of the more important segments of the income of Greater Boston. The agency which is responsible for convention solicita- tion as well as an extensive tourist promotion program for Boston is the Convention and Tourist Bureau.

Convention bookings for 1958 and 1959 indicated that Boston played host to more than 400 different con- ventions in each of those years. At an average expenditure of $125 per delegate, the convention business was in excess of $25,000,000 in those years.

Boston-city of yesterday and tomorrow-has been the theme of the Convention and Tourist Bureau's visitor promotion program, which has been centered around the outstanding motion picture film of the same name. This outstanding promotional medium was seen by a nation-wide audience of 10,000,000 people.

The publication and distribution of literature to convention delegates and in answer to mail requests is an- other important phase of the Bureau operation. More than 500 mail requests alone are received at the Bureau office weekly. Visitors to Boston place high value on such helpful material as guide maps, hotel guides, restau- rant guides and shoppers' guides. The Convention Bureau distributes better than a quarter million pieces of lit- erature each year to convention delegates and tourists.

Highly-competitive bidding among 50 of the country's major convention cities necessitates a strong and pro- gressive Convention Bureau in order that Boston may secure its share of the convention business. Boston today ranks as one of the top ten convention cities in America. An aggressive program of convention solicitation and tourist promotion is the function of the Convention and Tourist Bureau in order to hold and improve this position.

As plans develop and a convention and exhibition hallbecomes a reality in Boston, entire new fields of con- vention possibilities will be opened. As more conventions and conventioneers converge on the city, there will be demands for more hotel rooms, larger restaurants and additional transportation facilities. These front-line business men will, in turn, hire additional help and buy new equipment to accommodate the increased demand, and the dollars received through their cash registers will reach the pockets of all people who work in the Great - er Boston area.

In addition to the actual solicitation of conventions, one of the greatest aids to a large national convention is the housing service provided by the Boston Convention and Tourist Bureau. Many of the national organizations that meet in the city request assistance in arranging room reservations for their delegates. This task would be one of momentous proportions for a stranger to Boston or a person not familiar with the hotels and all their facilities. Past experience and complete familiarity with the hotels of the city enable this bureau to handle the
