NEW IMPROVEMENTS.

The Air-Tight Madeira Parlor Stove, PATENTED OCTOBER, 1845-IMPROVED, 1848.

By means of the improve- ments combined in this Stove, the flame and sulphurous gas- es are again brought into con- tact with the fire, by which many desirable advantages are secured. The heat is no long- er violent, but so mild and equable as to cause the tem- perature of a Madeira climate to circulate throughout every part of the room; the degree desired being regulated with the precision of clock-work by means of the valve in the smoke-pipe, without the pos- sibility of the escape of gas or noxious vapor-that being totally consumed with the smoke and dust arising from combustion, which are the grounds on which the patent is secured.

During damp or chilly mornings and evenings, a very small quantity of fuel used in this stove will be found to change the atmosphere throughout the room; while at the same time it is capable of producing, during the most severe cold weather, an agreeable summer atmosphere to the ex- tent of the apartment, and it will be no easy matter to de- cide which part of the room is warmest, so equable is the heat. The fire is kindled with ease, requires but little tending, and if properly looked to will not go out from week to week. A moment's attention on going to bed insures a bright fire in the morning. From one to one and a half tons of coal is sufficient to keep it in operation during the winter season.

GREAT IMPROVEMENT

-IN -

DAGUERREOTYPING.

JOHN A. WHIPPLE,

96 WASHINGTON STREET,

BOSTON,

HAS added to his extensive establishment a Miniature Steam Engine, for ex- ecuting the mechanical paris - the first and only application of STEAM POWER to this Art.

This power gives a more perfect: exqui- site and sensitive polish to his plates, es- pecially large plates for Groups and Family Pictures; and enables him to make a GREAT IMPROVEMENT on pictures which have been pronounced very perfect.

He received one of the highest premiums for the art at the late Mechanics' Fair. The best judges say his Family and other Groups wholly excel any thing of the kind in the Daguerreotype Art. But he very much prefers to have his pictures speak for him, and therefore respectfully invites the public to call, examine and judge for themselves.

Among the Groups, Family and single specimens in his extensive Gallery, may be seen Rev. S. BLISS and Family, Hon. WM. JACKSON and Family of sixteen, Gov. BRIGGS and Council, seated as in their Chamber, and the four Hon. Judges of the Massachusetts Supreme Court as in their seat-with many other distinguished personages.

Likenesses of children taken best with clear sky. Adults in any weather. Prices reasonable. Perfect satisfaction warranted.

MAYNARD AND NOYES'

BLACK WRITING INK.

FOR SALE AT THE UNIVERSITY BOOKSTORE.

THIS Ink has stood the test of thirty years' experience, and during this time has been constantly increasing in public favor and patron- age, and is now the leading article in the country. It flows with freedom, becomes permanently black, does not mould under any circumstances, and is adapted to any kind of pen.

Office of Merchants' Ins. Co., Boston, No. 18, 1848.

Messrs. Maynard & Noyes :- I have used your Writing Ink for the last sixteen years. In 1840, I gave you a certificate of its excellence, and having continued its use ever since, to my entire satisfaction, my opinion is confirmed in its superiority. It flows freely from the pen, and is in all respects the best Ink I have ever used. The other officers of the institution agree with me in the opinion here express- ed. GEORGE HOMER, SEC.

Boston, May 27, 1846.

For twenty years past I have had occasion to use Ink daily, and sometimes for the nicest of penmanship; occasionally, necessity or curiosity has led me to make use of the article made by different in- dividuals,-but I can cheerfully state that I have never found any that combined so many good qualities as that made by Maynard & Noyes.

N. D. GOULD, Teacher of Penmanship.

Registry of Deeds, Boston, Nov. 20, 1847.

Messrs. Maynard & Noyes :- I have made use of your Writing Ink for the recording of Deeds, &c., the past twenty-five years, and hav- ing found it to suit my wishes and purposes entirely, take pleasure in renewing my testimonial of its superioritv. From the appearance of the Records in my Office, I am satisfied it is superior to any I have used, and consider it particularly adapted for all purposes, where permanency of color is requisite or desirable. It flows well from the pen, and does not mould; and my oldest Records prove its color to be unalterably blaek.

H. ALLINE, Register of Deeds.

Post Office, Boston, Oct. 2, 1843.

The Black Writing Ink manufactured by Messrs. Maynard & Noyes, has been used in this Office for several years past. Other Inks have, during that time, been tested, but theirs has been in ev ery instance preferred. For fluidity, blackness, and permanency, the three important requisites, none has been found equal to it. GEO. W. GORDON, P. M.

HANKS' IMPROVED AIR HEATER,

FOR WARMING

Public and Private Buildings.

COMBINING more advantages than any article of the kind now in use. As the locomotive boiler is in economical and effective service, when compared with other boilers, so is this Improved Air Heater, when compared with other Heat- ers, now so generally used by the community at large.

1st. It will radiate more heat with a given quantity of fuel, than any other apparatus now in use for the same pur- pose.

2d. It is perfectly accessible at all times, and may be cleared of ashes and soot, either when in operation or not, by simply removing the rear plate of the Radiator.

3d. All the coal it may contain can always be seen by looking in at the ' feeding door;' thus it may at once be known if the quantity and quality of coal is as it should be.

4th It is so constructed that the required quantity of heat can always be had and controled, diminished or increas- ed at pleasure, with a corresponding consumption of fuel.

New England Air-Tight Cooking Stove, For Cooking with Coal or Wood.

THE best oven is that which will bake ineat or bread, in the shortest possible time, without burning. Meat baked in this way, has all that sweetness of flavor so peculiar to meat roasted in a tin oven, and the bread retains all the freshness of the grain.

A slow, sluggish oven, parboils before browning, which accounts for that close, confined, sweaty taste of meat, so unpleasant to the epicure, when baked in a slow oven .- Bread baked in a slow oven is merely kilu dried, the crust browned and dried from a quarter to an inch into the body of the loaf.

This Stove has been called the Quick Oven, for the rea- son that it will bake in as short a time as may be required. It can also be made so slow as to bake the most delicate cake. Bake quick or slow, at pleasure, and all this can be done without burning the articles.

It is better than a brick oven, for the reason that it can be qinade to bake uick or slow, and it will bake in every res- pect as well. For sale at
