LOWELL FIRE DEPARTMENT.
Established 1829. The Fire Department consists of seven Engine Companies; one Hook and Ladder Company, and one Hydrant Company. Six engines and the carriages of the Hook and Ladder and Ocean Hydrant Companies are owned by the city ; one engine by the Merrimac Manufacturing Company, and one by the Lowell Bleachery. Attached to the department, is 10,261 feet of leading hose, 208 feet of suction hose, 11 hose carriages, 93 buckets, 10 hooks. 27 ladders, and 600 feet of chain. The different corporations have 17,584 feet of leading hose and 45 force pumps. There are 9 reservoirs, 78 hydrants, and 16,954 feet of water pipe owned by the city. The number of persons connected with the Fire Department is 331. 'The compensation for Chief Engineer is $300 per annum ; for Assistant Engineer $50, and $12 extra to the clerk; Foreman of each company, $40, and members $35; Steward of No. 4, and Ocean Hydrant, $50; of Hook and Ladder, $30; of each other company $40. During the year ending March 30, 1858, the Department was called out 38 times ; by false alarms 25 times ; by alarms originating out of the city, 3 times. Losses by fire during the same period, $57,- 425, on which there was an insurance of $25,668. From March 30, to Dec. 20th, 1858, there were 14 fires, 28 false alarms, and 2 alarms from fires out of the city. RAILROADS.
The Boston and Lowell, Nashua and Lowell, Stony Brook, Salem and Lowell, and Lowell and Lawrence Railroads all connect directly with this city. Each has its separate board of officers and directors, but all are under the general management of the Boston and Lowell and Nashua and Lowell Railroad companies.
BOSTON AND LOWELL RAILROAD. This company was incorpo- rated June, 1830, and opened for travel, June 1835. Length 26 miles. It has two depots in this city, one in Middlesex street, and one corner of Merrimac and Dutton streets. Station in Boston, Causeway, corner of Andover street. Several trains connect with Boston and intermediate stations daily. Present fare-between Lowell and Boston, 75 cents; second class, 50 cents. Passage tickets in lots of not less than 50 are sold at nine-tenths the cost of single tickets. Season tickets, one year, $100; six months, $55; three months. $30, subject to the usual restrictions and regulations. Children between 4 and 12, half-price. George Stark, Manager ; John B. NASHUA AND LOWELL RAILROAD-Depot on" Middlesex Street .- This Railroad Company was incorporated June 22, 1835, and opened for travel October 8, 1838. Length, 13 miles. This road takes pas- sengers to all the stations on tlie Salem and Lowell, Wilton and Concord Railroads, and connects with the Boston, Concord and Montreal. and Northern railroads. Season ticket regulations similar to those of the Boston and Lowell.
STONY BROOK RAILROAD-Depot, Middlesex' Street It was in- corporated in 1845, and opened for travel July 1, 1848. Capital stock, $300,000. Length, 17 miles. It connects with the Nashua and Lowell Railroad at North Chelmsford, and terminates at Groton Junction, where connections are made with the Worcester and Nashua, Fitchburg, Cheshire, Vermont and Massachusetts, and Peterboroughi and Shirley Railroads. LOWELL, CONCORD AND FRAMINGHAM STAGE. This stage con- nects with the Fitchburg railroad at Concord, and with the Boston and Worcester railroad at Framingham. Leaves Lowell at 9 o'clock A. M., Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays .; and returns Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Through fare, $1.25. Curtis Stevens, proprietor.
LOWELL AND BOSTON STAGE. This line runs but a part of the year, and only on Sundays. Leaves Lowell at 4 o'clock P. M. Fare $1.25. A. Marion, proprietor.
LOWELL AND LAWRENCE STAGE. This stage runs only on Sun- days. Leaves Lowell at 9 A. M. and 4 P. M. Fare 50 cents. John Sleeper, Proprietor.
EXPRESSES.
Sargent & Co's Express makes four trips each way, to Boston, two to Salem, three to Lawrence, and three to Groton and Worcester, daily. They run in connection with Wells, Fargo & Co's California Express; Harnden & Co's and Kingsley & Co's New York and Southern Express, and Thompson and Co's Western Express. Principal office at Lowell, in the Boston and Lowell Railroad depot, Merrimack, corner of Dutton street. Orders may also be left at Nichols & Co's, Central, corner of Green street.
