There is included in the Fire Department, Rocket Engine, No. 2, at Ayer's City. Engine No. 12, on Fourth Street. Deluge Engine, No. 14, on Carter Street. Fire King, No. 6, at the Almshouse, which are manned, when needed, by volunteer companies.
At the date of the last report of the Chief Engineer (March 31, 1865), there were belonging to the Department, 7 engineers, 196 firemen, 10 engines (including two steamers), 11,000 feet of leading hose (2,100 not considered reliable), 250 feet of suction hose, 11 hose-carriages, 93 buckets, 8 hooks, 27 ladders, &c. The corpora- tions have 18,500 feet of hose and 350 force pumps. The city has 13 reservoirs and 76 hydrants, and 16,950 feet of water pipe laid through different streets.
There is connected with the Fire Department a Firemen's Fund As- sociation, intended to relieve firemen, who may be in need of assist- anee. The Trustees for 1865-6 are Chief Engineer Clifford, As- sistant Engineer Hall, and the Foreman and Assistant Foreman of each Company.
