MILITARY COMPANIES. There are three organized companies in Lowell, C, D and G, of the Sixth Regiment. Their armories are at the east end of the Market House Building. They are now (Sept. 1864) in the service of the United States for one hundred days. The names of the officers of the regiment and of the different companies, as well as the names of the mem- bers, will be found in the Lowell Military Record, page 15.

The exhibition of the Society takes place annually the last Thursday in September, on the Fair Grounds, comprising about fifteen acres in the southern part of the city of Lowell. [All the Roads leading out of Lowell are managed by the Boston and Lowell and Nashua and Lowell Railroad.]
BOSTON & LOWELL AND NASHUA & LOWELL RAILROAD. The Boston and Lowell Railroad was incorporated June, 1830, and opened for travel June, 1835. Length, 26 miles. Depot in Lowell, Merrimack, corner Dutton Street; in Boston, Cause- way, corner Andover Street.
The Nashua and Lowell Railroad was incorporated June 23, 1835, and opened for travel October 8, 1838. Length, 14 miles. Depot in Lowell, Middlesex, near Thorndike Street. A branch extends from Nashua to Wilton, N. H., 15 miles in length. The Nashua and Lowell Railroad connects with the Northern Railroad in New Hampshire. Officers of both roads : George Stark, Manager. John B. Winslow, Superintendent, at Depot in Boston. Abiel Rolfe, Freight und Passenger Agent, at Freight Depot, Lowell.
STONY BROOK RAILROAD. Incorporated, 1845. Opened for travel, July 1, 1848. Length, 17 miles, from Lowell to Groton Junction, where it connects with the Worcester and Nashua and Fitchburg Railroads. Depot in Lowell, Middlesex, near Thorndike Street. Tappan Wentworth, President. S. W. Stickney, Treasurer and Clerk, at Railroad Bank. F. H. Nourse, Local Superintendent, at Northern Depot.
LOWELL AND LAWRENCE RAILROAD. Incorporated, March 27, 1846. Opened for travel, July, 1848. Length, 13 miles. This road connects with the Boston and Maine Railroad, at Lawrence, for the East. SALEM AND LOWELL RAILROAD. Incorporated, 1848. Opened for travel, August 1, 1850. Length, 24 miles. This road connects with the Boston and Maine, Essex, South Reading Branch and Eastern Railroads.
