Great-great-grandson of JOHN ANDERSON, of Londonderry, New Hampshire; private in Captain Reid's company, Colonel Stark's regiment, four months from April 23, 1775; was at Bunker Hill; private in Captain Nesmith's company from the regi- ments of Colonels Thornton and Bartlett, for service in Canada in 1776; sergeant in Captain Reynolds's company of seventy volunteers, Colonel Nichols's regiment, Stark's brigade, July, 1777, to September 28, and was at Bennington (N.H. Rolls, i., 73, 178, 347; ii., 199).

Great-grandson of SAMUEL RUGGLES, of Pom- fret and Willington, Connecticut (1751- ); pri- vate in Captain Smith's company, Colonel Waterbury's regiment, which marched to New York, and thence to the northern department, from May 8 to November 15, 1775 (v. Conn. Rev. Rolls, 25, 69).


SAUNDERS, CHARLES HICKS, CAMBRIDGE.


Great-grandson of JOHN HICKS, of Cambridge (1725-1775); member of the "Boston Tea Party ;" on the morning of April 19, 1775, assisted in removing the planks from the great bridge leading to Cambridge, in order to retard, and if possible prevent, Lord Percy from crossing with his reënforcement of eighteen hun- dred soldiers and two brass cannons, and joining Major Pitcairn's force at Lexington; after which hastened with his gun and horse to harass the British troops returning from Lexington ; was shot dead by the flank guard of the British troops, on Massachusetts avenue, now Spruce street, in Cambridge, and was buried as he fell, without shroud or coffin, in the old burial ground in Cambridge. The city of Cambridge, in 1870, erected a monument over his remains, and a granite tablet in 1880 on the spot where he fell. His son Jonathan (Harvard College, 1770) also served as regimental surgeon in the Continental Army.
