for three years, before the expiration of his term of service, in Lippitt's Rhode Island regiment, as a musi- cian ; commissioned ensign, promoted to be lieutenant and captain, and served to the close of the war; was at the battles of Red Bank, Monmouth, Rhode Island, Springfield (New Jersey), at Valley Forge, and Corn- wallis's surrender; in command of two Rhode Island companies he garrisoned Saratoga; carried the colors of his regiment at Springfield, New Jersey, June 23, 1780, which, pierced by eleven bullets, are still in the State House at Newport; carried the old flag at the parades of the Rhode Island Cincinnati, of which he was an original member.
