to a very high head. The Casing, G, con- tains the wheel and gate. From G rises the quarter turn which is to connect with the pent-stock, flume or fore-bay, from which the water is supplied for the wheel. This quarter turn also sup- ports the gate-hoist- ing apparatus, consist- ing of the hand wheel A ; gear, B ; pinion, C; rack, D; gate rods, E; and their packing boxes, F. F. These wheels are pe- culiarly adapted to mill sites subject to back water, or the flow of tides ; also, where the drought of summer reduces the flow of water to three- fourths, one-half, or even one-fourth the ca- pacity of the wheel. For these purposes es- pecially they are war- ranted superior to any- thing ever yet invent- ed.
