In 1926 the citizens of West Newton pre- sented to the City a new branch library build- ing and grounds, valued at over $62,000, and in January 1928 the citizens of Newton Centre and Auburndale gave new buildings and land, valued at about $63,000 and $52,000 respec- tively. In 1930, the citizens of Waban pre- sented to the City a new branch building valued with grounds at $75,000. Two branches are housed in public school buildings, two in rented stores, and one in a remodelled engine house. In 1934, the residence of the late John

C Chaffin, 124 Vernon st, acquired by the city in 1930, was remodelled for "The Boys' and Girls' Library." The former quarters of that department in the main building now house the Art Department.

On January 1, 1935 the Library contained 171,033 volumes, to which additions are con- stantly made. The Circulation for 1934 was 833,425.

For 1935 the annual appropriation by the City was $82,610.50 for the library with its nine branches. In addition, there is the in- come from ten funds, as follows: $1,000 given by Alden Speare, the annual proceeds of which are about 60, and are to be used in the purchase of works illustrat- ing the manufacturing and mechanical

trades; $10,000 a bequest

B Jewett, to art form an fund the from David income from which now realizes somewhat over $500 a year; a bequest of the late Chas A Read, from which about $550 yearly can be received; a bequest from John C Chaffin of $5,000, the income to be used for books; $5,000, given by John S Farlow, the annual income from which is to be used for the pur- chase of books for the Reference Depart- ment; $5,000 a bequest from the late Miss Mary Shannon, $500 from Frank H Howes for books, $400 from Miss Sarah Lorane Graves, a former resident of Newton, now of New York City, to be known as the "Sarah Lorane Graves Fund" in memory of her sister Felicia Hemans Graves and her brother Dwight Webster Graves, the income to be devoted annually to the purchase of new books and periodicals; a bequest of $1,000 for books, from the late Oliver Fisher; and a bequest of $6,000 from Horace S Cousens for the pur- chase of books for the Newton Centre Branch Library. There are also two other funds which are accumilating.

In addition to books and periodicals there is in the Newton Free Library a large col- lection of mounted photographs of art and industrial pictures; also over six thousand stereopticon slides of geographical and in- dustrial subjects, and many stereographs. These are loaned to all desiring to make use of the material.

The library has also a large duplicate col- lection, the volumes of which are loaned for two cents a day, which is operated under the Howes fund

Library opens from 8 am to 9 pm. Sundays 2.30 to 5.30 pm, from November 1 to March 31
