A Public Service Publication
Few lines of Business have such a varied clientele as has the City Directory. It serves high and low, rich and poor, with impartiality and with profit to all.
It answers the questions What? and Who? which arise in daily business life and fills a position occupied by no other publication under the sun. With this edition we return to a complete House Directory for the whole City, arranged alphabetically by Streets, instead of by localities, as this style is preferred by a majority of users.
At the beginning of each Street is given a description of that Street, where it begins and ends, what Ward and Postal District it lies in, and its coordinates on the Map.
Where a Street runs from one Ward or Postal District into another, a note is inserted thus: "From here, Waban".
Intersecting Streets show whether they lead from the right or left, and whether they begin, end or cross, thus: "Norman Rd begins (left)".
Where departures from the rule of "Odd Numbers on the Right" occur, they are in- dicated in the description of the Street.
Residents and Places of Business are listed by their numerical location on each Street. The Householder is listed first, then other Adult Residents. The letter "r" indicates resi- dents who are not head of a household. Resident Owners are indicated by the symbol O.
Direction of Street Numbers: The Newton system is to begin numbering at the north or east end of each street, so numbers generally run toward the South or West. As odd numbers are usually on the right hand side, they will be found on the north or west side of streets, and the even numbers on the south or east side.
Estimating Distances: Except on a few business streets, 25 feet is allowed for each Street Number. Thus, No. 105 would be a quarter mile from the beginning of the street; No. 210, a half-mile; No 420, a mile, etc.
Public Streets which have not been accepted by the City are indicated by an asterisk: If accepted in part only, by a double asterisk.
Map: Location of each street on the Map is indicated by letter and figure following street description.
Ward Lines: The Ward in which a street is located is shown in the description of the street. If part in one Ward and part in another, the numbers falling in each are in- dicated.
Abbreviations: Al, alley; av, avenue; ct, court; e, east; fr, from; h, house; n, north; nr, near; pl, place; r, residence; rd, road; s, south; sq, square; ter, terrace; w, west; wd, ward. For other abbreviations see Index to Contents.
