Benjamin Sikes had four sons who worked many days with their father. After one day of particularly hard work, one of the boys remarked, "Father will do more in a day than all of us combined," and these men were all in their prime at the time.

When Elijah Plumley was a young man he carried upon his shoulder fifty-two quarts, full measure, of the heaviest rock-salt, a mile and a half without resting, and then turned and proposed to those who had wonder- ingly accompanied him, to return with it before he rested.

REMINISCENCES OF A MUSICAL LIFE

While in Europe, a well-known musician told Mr. Wilbur F. Miller that he would be able to command fabulous prices for singing, if he would study for six months. Mr. Miller replied that he was satisfied to be a farmer.

While in London, he attended service in Rev. Charles H. Spurgeon's temple. The great building was crowded, and a precentor led the singing without accompaniment. Mr. Miller joined in the singing, and sang in time, while the rest of the audience were a half beat behind. He did this by watching the precentor's lips as he sang. People were attracted by his singing and looked about to see the person who sang so correctly and powerfully. He was urged to come again that they might hear him more. On the steamer returning from Europe a concert was given one evening by a troupe of colored singers, for whom Mr. Miller sang all the solos, being accompanied by Mlle. Rhea, the noted Belgian actress.

When he was engaged to sing in the Chicopee Church it was as a bass singer. On his arrival he found that a tenor was needed, so he offered to try to sing that part. The committee was somewhat skeptical as to his ability to do so as he had been engaged to sing bass. He was per- mitted to make the attempt and was promptly engaged to sing tenor.

Mr. Miller was the principal singer in a party of Knights Templars who went West a few years ago. He and two companions began to sing one night after midnight in front of the Palmer House in Chicago. So large a crowd gathered about their cab that police interference

Was necessary and in order to disperse the crowd the singers were asked to stop.

One Sunday in Rev. Henry Ward Beecher's church in Brooklyn, Mr. Miller attended service, and was obliged to stand. During the singing of the hymus, he sang with so much power that a pewholder promptly gave him his own selt.

When traveling in Canada at one time with Mrs. Miller, they attended a church service where Mr. Miller requested to be allowed to sit in the choir gallery at the rear. He took part in the singing, and greatly to the surprise of his wife, who was seated elsewhere, rendered a solo. In the afternoon he was visited by a delegation from three churches who invited him to sing at the evening service and at a music festival during the week.
