It will be seen from this report that the appropriation has been exceeded $420.00. It has been an exceptional season of foods and excessive snow-falls which has necessitated extra expense. Clay and loam are the two poorest materials for roadways and unfortunately we have an abundance of both. It is almost impossible to make a good road that will stand (even for 1 year) with the material we have to use.

The lack of suitable material for the construction of hard roads should be a convincing argument in favor of improved methods. The making of any kind of a road is a matter of dollars and cents, the better and more desirable a road the more money must be expended in its construction. It is time that we should take a sensible view of the matter outside of political influences and take one step at least in the right direction for better road. It would be wise economy to be a little more liberal in our appropriation for roads and let us have at least a mile or two of crushed stone road.

It is a well known fact that Depot St. especially is in poor condition one-half the time, notwithstanding that it costs from two to four hundred per year to repair it, and I say that the present method of repairing a road, where so much heavy team- ing is done is wasteful in its practice and unsatisfactory in its results. We are simply paying for the privilege of eating dust in the summer and wading through deep mud in the spring and fall.

I am glad that the constant agitation of the question of roads has awakened at least a few of our citizens and an article appears in the warrant to see what action the town will take in regard to purchasing Stone Crusher and Roller.

Very respectfully,

ARTHUR F. JONES, Road Commissioner.
