Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

Due to the interest caused by this program a conference was arranged at the Worcester County Sanatorium with Dr. Edson W. Glidden, Superintendent. Five eighth grade pupils attended this conference and asked fifty questions regarding tuberculosis. When these were answered to their satisfaction, the pupils were taken through the Sanatorium. Many devices and their varied uses were explained. It was a very educational trip.

We are grateful to the American Red Cross Association for providing hot soup for a period of five weeks to pupils who carried their lunches. It was served in the Lower Town Hall, with a teacher

21

in charge, at the cost of ten cents per week per pupil. The cost to the Red Cross was considerably higher.

Miss Gladys Goldthorpe, nutritionist, from the Extension Service, gave demonstrations, "The Contents of a Good Lunch Box," at the Center, Grammar and High School buildings.

During the year Dr. Farrar of Worcester conducted three psy- chological examinations. It is hoped by this means that pupils who have difficulty in learning may be helped. Many of the pupils examined were found to have uncorrected physical defects over a period of years.

Sterling Health Camp was opened for eight weeks, four weeks longer than last year. Two boys were privileged to go from Douglas. One boy gained 13 pounds and was given credit for being a model camper. Christmas seals make Sterling Health Camp possible, one of the many health opportunities their sale affords.

We are grateful to the Kiwanis Club for making it possible for seven pupils to have their tonsils and adenoids removed.

A total of 13 pupils had tonsils and adenoids removed during the year. This is 19% of the nose and throat defects needing at- tention.

Dental Report-Dr. John E. Dunleavy, School Dentist:

Number of pupils examined 383

Number of pupils receiving certificates at time of examination 97

Number of pupils receiving certificates at time of clinic 24

Number of pupils receiving certificates from Family

dentist 10

34% of the dental defects were corrected. Some children re- ported visits to the family dentist, work not completed to date. The high percentage of dental defects indicates the great need of im- proving the nutrition of all children.

CORRECTION OF EYE DEFECTS

Number of pupils examined by specialist, received glasses . 8 Number of pupils examined by specialist, glasses changed 5 Number of pupils examined by specialist, glasses not necessary 4 Number of pupils examined by specialist, diet changed 2 50% of the pupils with eye defects, had the defect corrected.

22

The annual Pre-school Clinic was held in June. The children were vaccinated and examined by Dr. John J. Quinn, school physi- cian.

Many health meetings have been attended. I am also taking a course (for credit) in "Principles and Practices of Health Educa- tion," given at the State Teachers' College, Worcester.

I feel that we are making definite strides toward a healthier situation both in the school and in the home, and in closing may I thank everyone for the sincere support and cooperation given and interest shown.

Respectfully submitted,

(Mrs.) EDITH M. TAFT, R. N.,

School Nurse.
