ANNUAL REPORT OF
THE BOARD OF ENGINEERS
MERRIMAC FIRE DEPARTMENT.
Merrimac, Mass., Feb. 1, 1909.
To the Selectmen and Citizens of the Town of Merrimac :
The Board of Engineers submit the following report for the year ending on this date:
There has been eleven alarms.
Feb. 13, 1908-Alarm from Box 12 for slight fire in rear of Preble Bros.' store; caused by boys throwing a lighted match in a pile of straw.
April 1, 1908-Alarm from Box 12 for a brush fire in the Oaks, on land owned by John E. Currier.
April 5, 1908-Alarm from Box 12 for brush fire at George Battis', at Highlands.
April 7, 1908 .- Alarm from Box 32 for fire in a small building owned by Frank Bailey at Merrimacport; dam- age about $25.00.
April 30, 1908-Alarm from Box 12 for brush fire on the Plains.
71
ENGINEERS' REPORT.
June 20, 1908-Alarm from Box 21 for fire on Main Street, in rear of tenement occupied by Frank Hale; caused by overheated oil stove. Damage very small.
June 22, 1908-Alarm from Box 20 for fire in pile of bedding straw in barnyard of Mr. Mullin's residence on Bear Hill Street; set by small child of the family living there. The Department responded and the fire was ex- tinguished with chemicals; damage slight.
June 23, 1908-False alarm from Box 13 for an imagi- nary fire in shop on Grove Street owned by John E. Currier and occupied by Brown & Earl; cause of alarm being steam issuing from the windows.
July 15, 1908-Alarm from Box 4 for a brush fire at Birch Meadow.
Oct. 25, 1908-Alarm from Box 12 for fire in barn of P. A. Lowery at Tucker's Hill. The barn with contents were a total loss and the ell of the house was slightly damaged. The cause of the fire was the overturning of a lighted lantern.
We have purchased 250 feet of hose this year, making 500 feet of new hose now in service. We recommend that each year there be added 250 feet more, and in this manner it will keep us well supplied with good hose.
Hose No. 2 at the Port has been placed in good con- dition; we have had electric lights installed, and a run placed for the wagon, making the house much more convenient and comfortable.
We recommend the purchasing of two No. 7 Under- writers' Extinguishers, to replace two Star Extinguish- ers we have now, as these extinguishers are not up to the standard and do not give good satisfaction, and should be condemned.
72
ENGINEERS' REPORT.
The apparatus is in good condition, the house and fur- niture are well kept and presents a very neat and tidy appearance.
We had a chance on the evening of Oct. 25th to test the steamer as we had to lay nearly 1,500 feet of hose from the last hydrant to reach the Birch Meadow Road, and we found that our stream was sufficient to do good work at that point, demonstrating the fact that the steamer could be relied on to meet the demands of the suburban districts.
The fire alarm system is in very poor condition. We have had to use the whistle on Walker's shop during the past nine months, owing to the shutting down of the plant on which the whistle is located ; through the day it is not so bad but at night we are practically without means of sounding an alarm, and we recommend that this matter be given prompt attention.
Respectfully submitted,
JOHN W. GROCUT, Chief, WM. S. TUCKWELL, 1st Asst., H. W. HALE, 2nd Asst.
