MERRIMAC TOWN REPORT

1

REPORT OF THE MERRIMAC TOWN FOREST COMMITTEE TO JANUARY 1, 1934

No appropriation was made for the Town Forest for 1933. Work was done in the Forest by men from the Welfare Department sent to us by the Selectmen. On November 15th a letter was received from the Massachusetts Forestry Department requesting a quick employment of men whose wages were to be paid by the government, and suggesting that forestry work was most favored for employment. The suggestion was also made that additions be made to present Town Forest wherever possible.

A meeting was called which included the selectmen, Forest Com- mittee, Water and Electric Board and Finance Committee. It was de- cided to purchase a tract of land from the John Currier estate and op- tion was obtained. At a special town meeting on December 12th it was voted to purchase 19134 acres of this estate for $767. A bill of $192.18 for survey of this purchase made by the selectmen made the total price $959.18. This new purchase immediately came in charge of the Town Forest Committee and increased our Town Forest to 29134 acres.

Work done in the Town Forest during the year 1933 was thinning and trimming 5000 pine trees. This work was recommended by the State Forest men. We had trimmed 20 acres of hard wood and mowed over some ten or more acres of sprouts among small pines. There was one mile of road built and two bridges over running streams and ditches dug near both bridges to improve the drainage. A camp was built to shelter men. We had cut 4212 cords of wood.

40 cords sold to the town $160.00

2 1/2 cords sold cash 12.50

25 trees set along roadside from Town Forest 50.00

$222.50

This makes the Town Forest cost to date, above purchase price, $138.43. Work has gone forward since January and some 40 cords of wood are cut. Details will appear in 1934 report.

That portion of the Town Forest controlled by the Water and Electric Board has been operated by that Board. A record of their work will appear in their report.

MERRIMAC TOWN REPORT

REPORT OF CEMETERY TRUSTEES

To the Selectmen and Citizens of the Town of Merrimac

Continuing the work of improvement begun last year we have added shrubs and plants in Locust Grove which have shown their beauty in various colors during the Summer and which will increase as they grow in size in years to. come.

We have been able to get some help from the government C.W.A. money in removing stumps from the new addition on the top of the hill which will help prepare the ground for the time when we are able to survey and lay out avenues and plot out lots for sale later on.

We were in hopes to get some money to surface the avenues near the entrance as they are very bad in the spring of the year, but we have not been able to do this at the time of this writing.

At Church St. we have made a great improvement in the older section in setting up and repairing the stones which had fallen down, and some of them have broken, and we hope next year to get a lawn that may be kept cut and green in memory of the worthy people whose good character built a good town. And this will also apply to the Lower Corner which perhaps shows as much improvement as any of our three cemeteries.

Here we have repaired and set up some of the oldest stones in town and intend to care for graves of people whose remains have rested in peace for more than two hundred years. We have repaired one lot which has been an eyesore for a long time, as there are no living heirs or anyone who cares whether it is kept up or not, which shows the value of Perpetual care as any of our own lots in years to come may get into the condition this one was if we do not take this precaution.

We have also installed town water for the use of those who wish to carry plants or flowers to place on their lots.

There seems to be some call for a smaller lot, and so we have a section for one grave lots in Locust Grove and have made one burial there already, Corporal Parker.

Early in the Spring after confering with Trustees of Amesbury and Haverhill Cemeteries as to methods we found that we had no records showing who owned lots, and we adopted a form of deed usd in Ames- bury by which every deed issued has a corresponding stub kept in the Town Office as a' record of the sale.

We issued a call for the old deeds to be sent in and exchanged for the new form, and we have already received nearly forty.

32

MERRIMAC TOWN REPORT

It may seem a little strange to some people that there have been about 12 interments and only one lot sold, (H. A. Trull) but these burials were in lots already owned by the families, we suggest that it is a good plan to select your lot before the time when trouble comes.

RICHARD A. SARGENT, CHAS. A. LANCASTER, CLARENCE O. LIBBY,

Trustees of Merrimac Cemeteries

MERRIMAC TOWN REPORT

ANNUAL REPORT OF PLAYGROUND COMMISSIONERS

The Playground Commissioners herein submit their second annual report for the year ending December 31, 1933.

In view of the fact that we have received no money, either by ap- propriation, popular subscription, or donation to assist us in our work we feel that the year has been very successful.

The erection of the safety fence, which overhangs home plate, for the purpose of eliminating the former foul-ball hazzard which necessi- tated trespassing on posted land, and the safety rails on either side of the back stop, for the purpose of keeping the audience from that sec- tion of the playing lines that formerly were so dangerous; were two of our greatest accomplishments.

Th baseball diamond was constantly cared for by the volunteer labor of Fred Gibbs. The standing grass was given to Henry Deminie for his labor in keeping the ball field mowed.

The football field was laid out and goal posts set, through the ef- forts of volunteer labor and material donations. Many football games were enjoyed by the citizens of Merrimac and out of town guests.

A C. W. A. project is now under way. A stone drain is being laid through the center of the playing field and filling is being dumped there- in for the purpose of eliminating the former low and swampy condition.

The stone and material for filling are being taken from the old reservoir, which is to be completely removed, thus eliminating the haz- zard of injury to children, who insist on playing close to the opening, the depth of which is thirteen feet.

We wish to thank all those who have helped us, either by labor or donations, in our endeavors this year.

Respectfully submitted,

ALEXANDER M. SULLIVAN, WILLARD T. KELLY, CHARLES A. FOLLANSBEE, FREDERICK E. GIBBS, RAYMOND J. BAGLEY,

Playground Commissioners.
