BRIDGES.

The condition of the bridges this year is much better than last year, yet a few are still in a somewhat dangerous con- dition and we advise that a new bridge be voted to replace the Burleigh bridge.

The new bridges at Thorndike are undoubtedly two of the best bridges in town. The contracts for these were let at a favorable time, and the town saved a large sum of money, which would not have been the case had the placing of the contract been delayed even a short time, owing to the imme- diate and rapid advance in the price of iron.

SEWERS AND CULVERTS.

The sum of $3,000 was voted by the citizens of the town for the construction of new sewers, the location of which and the manner in which they should be constructed being left to the discretion of the Selectmen.

We finally decided to use the money in building the Pine, Knox, Thorndike and Dublin street sewers in the Depot Vil- lage, the construction of the same to be under the supervis- ion of the Superintendent of Highways; by so doing much better work was done and more money was saved than had the work been done by contract.

47

After buying the pipe and making all preparations for the construction of the Dublin street sewer, we found it impossi- ble to build on account of inability to secure rights of way through certain property in that locality.

Report of the Overseers of the Poor.

We desire to briefly call attention to the increase of the total expense of our department, and to say that this is due to the increase of the insane. Our town is not alone in this particular, as the increase of the insane is general through- out the State.
