Report of the Young Men's Library Association


To the Members of the Young Men's Library Association:


I herewith submit my twenty-first annual report as librarian of your Association.


CIRCULATION


The total circulation for the year was 77,295, divided as follows :- Main Library, 42,092; Three Rivers Branch, B _ 12,491; Thorndike Branch, 7,565; Bondsville Branch, 7 R-15,147.


The increase in circulation over that of last year was 6,663. The largest circulation which the library has ever had was in 1928, when it totalled 71,254. This year's circulation exceeded that of 1928 by 6,041. The main reason for the increase is the depression-people have time to read.

Report of Superintendent of Schools


To the School Committee of the Town of Palmer:


I herewith present my twenty-first annual report as Superintendent of Schools in Palmer. This is the thirty-ninth in the series of reports issued by the super- intendents of the town.


INTRODUCTION


This report will be extremely brief. In the interests of economy, bare mention will be made of several mat- ters only.


ATTENDANCE


The attendance statistics for the school year of 1930- 31 were as follows :- Enrollment, 2,284; Average Mem- bership, 2,137.849; Average Attendance, 2,073.855; Per Cent. of Attendance, 97.03; Tardinesses, 383. Our at- tendance figures show a healthy condition exists in the schools.


HEALTH WORK


The health work in our schools for the past year has been conducted on a high plane of efficiency. The usual preventive work in diphtheria, the detection of

tuberculosis, physical examinations, and Child Health Day have been carried on with very satisfactory accom- plishments.


Miss Frydryk, the school nurse, is doing excellent work.


PROMOTIONS


The promotion statistics in the grades for the last school year were as follows :- Number of pupils 1,686; Promoted Unconditionally, 1359-Percent, 80.61; Pro- moted Conditionally, 213-Percent, 12.63; Not Promoted, 114-Percent, 6.76.


EXAMINATIONS


The statistics on Mid-Year and Final Examinations for the past school year were as follows:


Number taking tests, 1038; Number Mid-Year Averaging 70% or Better, 1,005- Percent, 96.82; Number Averaging Less than 70%, 33-Percent, 3.18; Number Averaging Between 60% and 70%, 19-Percent, 1.83; Number Averaging Between 50% and 60%, 11-Percent, 1.05; Number Averaging Less Than 50%, 3-Percent, .289. Number Taking Tests, 1,035; Num- Final ber Averaging 70% or Better, 999- Percent, 96.52; Number Averaging Less Than 70%, 36-Percent, 3.48; Number Averaging Between 60% and 70%, 22-Percent, 2.13; Number Averaging Between 50% and 60%, 7-Percent, .676; Number Averaging Less Than 50%, 7-Percent, .676.


A summary of these statistics covering the entire period that these examinations have been in force from

the school year 1921-22 to 1930-31 shows the following re- sults :- Number Taking Tests, 19,667; Number Averag- ing 70% or Better, 17,204-Percent, 87.47; Number Averaging Less Than 70%, 2,463-Percent, 12.52; Num- ber Averaging Between 60% and 70%, 1,220-Percent, 6.65; Number Averaging Between 50% and 60%, 649- Percent, 3.21; Number Averaging Less Than 50%, 595- Percent, 3.02.


SCHOOL SAVINGS


The report of school savings for the last school year, September, 1930, to July, 1931, is as follows :- Number of Collections, 283; Number of Deposits, 26,857; Amount of Deposits, $6,569.88.


The combined School Savings from date of incep- tion, November 1, 1921, to July 1, 1931, are: Number of Deposits, 236,840; Amount of Deposits, $66,825.10.
