Water Commissioners
Report of Water Commissioners
January 20, 1953
This past year the additional water supply was put into operation. During the months of September, Oc- tober and November, we were forced to pump about 10 million. gallons of water from the new supply. If we did not have this supply, water would have been restrict- ed for a longer period of time than it ever had been in previous years. At time, we were pumping 250,000 gal- lons per day which is about this town's consumption dur- ing dry times. Our pump is capable of pumping 648,000 gallons per day so even during dry times we still main- tain a safety margin of 398,000 per day. The well itself is capable of producing a million gallons in addition to the amount we are now using, so, if in the future the town does expand its water mains, we will be able to meet the new demand for water.
The pump is run by a 40 horse-power motor. We have a gasoline engine for stand-by power in case of an electric power failure. During cold weather an electric heater keeps the building from freezing.
Our usual work was carried on with eight new water entrances installed, eight curb boxes renewed and eight hydrants repaired.
We had a bulldozer improve some of the fire lane roads on the Water Shed providing for better fire protec- tion. The State Department of Conservation recom- mended that some of the older growth lumber be cut.
51
Water Commissioners
Some new parts were installed in our chlorinator but the general condition of this equipment is very poor.
Part of our delinquent water accounts were cleaned up but there is still more to be done.
Water was supplied to the Hampshire County Sana- torium this past summer by means of an overland pipe- line provided by them, to supplement their supply. Much time and consideration has been given to obtain a set of plans for a permanent six inch line to provide the Sana- torium with a permanent water supply. This would mean a new source of revenue for the Water Department.

Library
Library Report
The Western Massachusetts Library Federation completed its two-year program in September. The twelve towns included in the program and the twenty-five towns serviced by the Greenfield Public Library are work- ing now for a larger appropriation from the state so that the thirty-seven towns may enjoy the facilities of the Bookmobile, already visiting many of these towns, and have access to the equipment of the Federation which is now, with the exception of the books, in storage.
