Report of the Chief Engineer
OF THE
Fire Department.
TO THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN :
Gentlemen, - In accordance with the Regulations of the Fire Department I submit the following Report.
The force of the Department consists of five Engineers, sixteen members of Andover Steamer No. 1, sixteen members of J. P. Bradlee Steamer No. 2, and ten members of B. F. Smith Hook and Ladder company.
The apparatus consists of one third-class steam fire-engine, one sixth-size Sibley steam fire-engine, one hand-engine, with hose-carriages for cach : one horse hosc-carriage, one hook- and-ladder truck. There are about thirty-three hundred feet of hose in good condition ; the remainder, about ten hundred feet, cannot be depeended upon.
There have been thirteen alarms of fire during the past year (1887), as follows :
Feb. 20. Joseph M. Bradley's store.
April 22. William C. Donald's factory.
May 11. John Stack's shed.
May 17. Washington Mills, Lawrence, to which men and Steamer No. 1 responded.
May 3, 17, 20, and 23. Woods in Frye Village.
May 23. Woods in Ballard Vale.
July 6. Walter Pettengill's barn.
July 26. Stone House.
Nov. 29. Mansion House.
Dec. 7. John Mears's house.
60
The past year the Department has been very much troubled in regard to horses. I recommend the purchase of three horses for use in the Fire and Street Departments.
At the last annual March meeting the Town voted twenty- five hundred dollars for a complete System of Fire Alarm. At a subsequent meeting they reduced it to five hundred dollars, and appointed the Board of Engineers a committee to have charge of the same. With that amount we have been able to connect the two Engine-houses ; but we consider the system in its infancy, and hope the Town will in the near future see the necessity of completing the same.
I recommend that $2500 be appropriated for the run- ning expenses of the Fire Department the ensuing year.

Report of Cemetery Committee.
The Cemetery Committee herewith submit their Annual Report, with statement of receipts and expenditures for the year ending Feb. 6th, 1888.
There has been a new entrance and driveway made to the receiving tomb, making it much easier of access during the winter. It was found that the basin that was intended for a pond could not be made to hold water without a large expense. It was decided to fill the basin, which has been done. The walks and avenues have been cleaned.
No wood has been sold during the past year. Three burial lots have been sold.
The face-wall should be extended, and further filling of the basin and other improvements made that may be needed to keep the premises in good order.
We therefore respectfully ask for the usnal appropriation of $300, with the proceeds of such sales as may be made from the premises during the ensuing year.
