ANNUAL REPORT
REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
To the Berkley School Committee :
Gentlemen:
It is with pleasure that I am submitting to the Berkley School Committee this sixth report as super- intendent of schools in the towns. Each year of the six has seen its new special problems, many of them difficult. For some of these we have already found solutions. Other problems still remain to be worked out. In the following report I have attempted to dis- cuss these problems in the light of the needs of the schools of Berkley.
I-OVERCROWDED CONDITIONS.
The following information is not new to the citizens of Berkley. The enrollment in the Berkley school increased three years ago to the point where it was necessary to establish a room for the first grade in the Town Hall. While this situation was entirely possible as a makeshift, it is unfortunate that it has been necessary to continue it as long as three years.
The large enrollment in the school, coupled with the fact that each teacher is required to teach two grades, has acted to render the teaching prob- lem increasingly difficult. After careful study of the situation it was found necessary to add an as- sistant to the staff. With this addition we are doing as good work as is possible under the existing con- ditions.
The need for additional room is evident. The committee after conference with the Board of Se- lectmen and Finance Committee, submitted a pro-
5
ANNUAL REPORT
ject to the P. W. A. for an addition to the Berkley School to consist of two rooms which could be con- verted into an auditorium. The committee felt that in this way a double need would be met and that not only would suitable and needed room be made available for school purposes, but a large assembly hall would be made available for town meetings and community gatherings. .
This project was transferred from P. W. A. due to the fact that it fell below the minimum of $25,000 set for P. W. A. projects. Since that time the pro- ject has been tangled up in W. P. A. red tape. It is hoped that by the time of the annual town meeting, this will have received final approval and that it may be possible to include an article in the warrant asking for an appropriation to cover the town's share of the project. That it is possible for the town to finance this without any increase in the tax rate may be seen from the following figures :
Reduction in cost of schools over 1935 figures, $1,488.41
Probable reduction in net cost for
1937 over 1935 figures, 2,000.00
The saving in net cost of schools over that of last year will in four years care for the cost of the project.
