ANNUAL REPORT OF PLANNING BOARD
The Planning Board members wish to thank the Library Committee for allowing us to use their facilities temporarily. All boards and agencies of the Town except one have co- operated effectively with us during the year. We wish to thank the co-operating members for their help.
Request from landowners to divide twelve parcels of land was received. All but one division were signed by the Plan- ning Board members as not requiring planning board approval under the sub-division Control Law, and the Registry of Deeds was so notified in each case. One sub-division of land off Bay View Avenue was granted for the odd numbered lots for Bristol County Associated Engineers Incorporated and so recorded.
Inquiries were received and answered from many out-of- state people concerning Berkley. Recent inquiry has been made by one party wishing to establish an animal farm in our Town.
The new road to Dighton Rock State Park has been built and the Board urges the support of every one for this park as it contains vast reaching possibilities of great economic value to our Town. The Board has been supporting the Governor and all State Officials in their efforts to extend this improvement. We wish to acknowledge with thanks the effort and expense expended by Mrs. Joseph Bonvie in behalf of this National Shrine.
70
ANNUAL REPORT
Urgently we plead with the townspeople to contemplate on the pressing need for better educational facilities for our children by supporting the School Committee in their work and any other school advance program.
The Board continues in its stated policy of strict control and prevention of re-location or extension of "junk yards" within the Town limits. We feel that it would be a wise move for the Town not to issue any new permits for any new yards in any new location even if any of the present proprietors should decide not to renew their licenses.
We call to the attention of the voters that all Planning Board Meetings and Minutes thereof are open to the General Public.
The Massachusetts Department of Commerce Officials held one meeting this year in Berkley on an open forum basis to further the understanding of the people of Berkley on the subject of Regional Planning. Mrs. Effie Robbins completed a ten week course in Planning sponsored by and paid for by the Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Planning Board and she has been active on the "Steering Committee" of the Southeastern Massachusetts Economic Conference. Berkley is in line to receive benefits from Regional Planning Expendi- tures. Judge Gordon Owens has contributed valuable assist- ance to us often this year. More work should be done and closer co-operation should be given by Berkley in the Regional Planning Field.
Other projects worked on by the Berkley Planning Board during 1957 include sewerage control, river improvement, and base map studies. We are working for the cleaning and improving of the River to foster Summer recreational facilities and hope to see extensive boating in Berkley soon. We ask for support of each citizen for our program to obtain Govern- ment aid in starting some studies in the Town this year.
Respectfully submitted,
ELWELL H. PERRY,
Secretary

REPORT OF THE TOWN AUDITOR
To the Board of Selectmen Town of Berkley
The books and accounts of the Collector of Taxes were audited as of December 31, 1957. Records of collections and payments to the treasurer proved to be correct. Tax records were checked and verified with a listing of all outstanding accounts made. The Treasurer's books were examined and found to be in order.
Notices of unpaid taxes owing to the town, were mailed for verification purposes to persons shown on the books with unpaid balances.
Respectfully submitted, FRED HEYWOOD, JR.
REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN
The installation of a new oil furnace in the library has resulted in more efficient heat and a sharp decrease in the amount of janitor service required. The library steps have been rebuilt, greatly improving the appearance of the building.
It should be noted that since it was opened, the Berkley Library has been served by only two permanent librarians. It is with regret that we note that 1957 was marked by the death of Mrs. Florence Williams, librarian from 1920 to 1936 and the resignation of Mrs. Laura Swift, librarian from 1936 to September 1957.
We wish to thank Mrs. Dorothy Koski for her services from September through December and announce the appoint- ment of Mrs. Helen Craven, formerly assistant librarian in the Acushnet Library, as permanent librarian.
Respectfully submitted, RUTH HOWLAND CORINNE H. MACKER VIOLA E. HOLMES

4. Comment
In 1957 over $86,000 went through the collector's office, a gain of $4,000 over 1956. I again recommend that the town consider office facilities for the convenience of its taxpayers.
Eleven small old balances were cleared during the year; ten items of outstanding taxes and excises appear in the 1957 year-end list in comparison with sixteen at the end of 1956. Much of the credit for this goes to the state-approved deputy, Mr. John P. Flynn. Appreciation is also due Attorney Anthony R. Mastromarino who did a great deal for the town at very small cost. The usual co-operation of the Board of Assessors is also to be noted. Two or three delinquent accounts remain in the 1954 personal property and 1955 real estate taxes, but it is expected these will be settled early in 1958.
Respectfully submitted, FRANCIS F. G. ANDREWS, Collector of Taxes

ANNUAL REPORT
REPORT OF THE CHIEF OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
To the Board of Selectmen Town of Berkley
Gentlemen:
As your Chief of the Fire Department, I submit the fol- lowing report for the year 1957:
During the year of 1957 there were a total of 57 fire calls answered by the Fire Department, twelve (12) of these calls were for help by neighboring towns and three (3) were false alarms.
The Fire extinguishers in the school and library were inspected during the past year.
The past fall a 3,000 gallon tank trailer was purchased from the Collins Transportation Company of Taunton, this tank is to be used as a water tank for house fires and serious woods fires and is expected to be located in the Myricks district. Cal's Motor Transportation Company volunteered as a service to the town to transport the tank to the scene of fire in emergency.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the residents of the town for their prompt action and cooperation with the fire department; also to express my appreciation to the members of the Fire Department, Police Department, and all others who have cooperated in carrying out the duties of this office.
Respectfully submitted, GARLAND TEMPLETON, Chief of the Fire Department
REPORT OF THE FIRE COMMITTEE
At the Annual Town Meeting in March 1956 it was voted for the Moderator to appoint a committee for the enlargement of the Berkley Fire Department in the Myricks Section of Berkley. This committee was appointed and we contacted Mr. Carlton Manter, the architect, on the Berkley Fire Station to see what he would recommend for a Station and give us an estimate what he thought it would cost to build a Station.
79
ANNUAL REPORT
He recommended a similar construction as the Berkley Station only on a smaller scale with one door, a building 18x40 at an estimate of $10.00 per sq. ft. which would be $7,200.00. So the committee recommended $8,000.00 for the construction of a station in Myricks.
Mr. Frank Galligan of the Farrar Co., makers of the truck at Berkley, was contacted to see what information we could get on a truck.
Mr. Galligan stated that we would have to go to 750 Ford or equivalent as the truck at Berkley, which is a 600 Ford is loaded to capacity, as the underwriters would not pass a new truck so heavily loaded, so he estimated a 750 Ford or equiva- lent would cost $11,800.00 for the minimum, so the committee recommended $12,500.00 for the purchase of a new truck.
At the Annual Town Meeting, March 11, 1957, the pre- ceding report was given and $8,000.00 was voted for the station and $12,500.00 was voted for the truck.
After the Annual Town Meeting, March 11, 1957, there was a new committee appointed with two new members, George W. Stetson and Richard A. Perry, replacing two mem- bers of the past committee.
The specifications on the truck were completed and we advertised for bids on the truck and the following bids were received.
1. W. S. Darley by H. M. Howe, $10,861.00
of Providence, R. I.
2. Maxim Motor, Middleboro, Mass. 12,494.30
3. Farrar Co., Woodville, Mass. 12,465.00
4. Maynard Fire Equipment Co., Marshfield, Mass.
12,400.00
The contract was awarded to the low bidder on the truck.
The Myricks Community Club offered their piece of land on Grove Street as a site for the Fire Station, and we want to thank the officers and members of the Myricks Community Club for their generosity in donating their piece of land for the sum of ($1.00) one dollar, which the Fire Committee accepted as the site for the Fire Station.
80
ANNUAL REPORT
Mr. Carlton H. Manter, architect of Taunton, was hired to go ahead with the drawings and specifications on the Fire Station and we advertised for bids on the Station and received the following bids:
1. Nap Dufault, Fall River $14,132.75
2. E. Pardini Construction Co., Pawtucket, R. I. 13,536.00
3. John F. Doyle, Fall River 13,675.00
4. Charles H. Mathews, Mansfield 12,334.00
5. L. M. Witherell and Sons, Taunton 15,555.00
6. * D. J. Sullivan, Taunton 12,300.00
(*Did not include Plumbing and Heating. )
At a special town meeting it was voted to transfer $1,500.00 from the truck account to the building fund and to borrow $5,000.00 to be paid at $1,000.00 per year.
The contract was awarded to Charles H. Mathews, Con- tractor, of Mansfield, Mass., and the Station has been com- pleted except the blacktopping of the driveway.
The truck is expected to be delivered any day.
