ELECTION MEETINGS

Four election meetings were held during 1960. These were the annual town election in March, the Presidential Pri- maries in April, the State Primaries in September and the State Election in November. Due to the hurricane there were no lights at the town hall for the September primaries, and appreciation is due those co-operating in a community effort to see that the vote counting went on as scheduled. A gen- erator was furnished by Mr. Herbert Hutchings of the Wirth- more Farm, on a trailer furnished by Mr. Arnold Perry, and was hooked up to the town hall lighting system by Mr. William Hogan, all without cost to the town.

Previously unacknowledged is the co-operation of Mr. Harold Ashley in supplying an overhead lighting system for the voting booths used at elections. This was also furnished without cost to the town.

1960 saw the beginning of a new system of election officials in Berkley. Under state law the moderator, chairman of selectmen and town clerk no longer automatically serve at elections in one precinct towns, and the selectmen appointed the following to serve for a one year term:

Warden Deputy Warden Clerk Deputy Clerk Inspectors

L. Clyde Cummings Ruth E. Ide Blanche Campbell Nancy Gouveia Clotilde Blackmore Roy Colpitt Josephine Makepeace Sadie Townley

ANNUAL REPORT

REPORT OF SELECTMEN FOR 1960

During 1960 the operating costs of the several town de- partments remained well within their budgets. Some transfers of funds from departmental accounts to other accounts were necessary due to the severe snowstorms coupled with the September hurricane as well as to supplement the General Relief account.

Under the highway program a section of North Main Street reconstruction was completed. Holloway Street recon- struction was completed during the year, and reconstruction of Orchard Street was started.

Many of the dead and diseased elm trees along our town ways were removed and destroyed.

Riverside Drive was laid out by the selectmen as instruc- ted by a vote of the town at a special town meeting held in June 1960. The State Department of Public Works surveyed a section of South Main Street for future reconstruction by the town. Presently $12,000.00 has been accumulated toward this project.

We recommend the acceptance of Riverside Drive as a public way at the next annual town meeting; $1,000.00 be made available to continue reconstruction of Orchard Street; $5,000.00 toward South Main Street reconstruction, and a sum of money for elm tree removal.

The Department of Public Works recommends that $600.00 be made available as the town's share for the repainting of the Berkley-Dighton Bridge.

At this time, we wish to express our appreciation to all for their excellent cooperation with us in the conduct of the town's business.
