The committee chosen to audit the accounts of the several town officers, submit the accompanying report.

The usual appraisal of the Almshouse property was made. We found that institution in excellent condition, the inmates seem well supplied with good and wholsome food, and receive kind and considerate care as their several needs seem to require. Mr. and Mrs. Penniman, who have the house in charge, are deserving of very ereditable mention ; their labors have increased the past year owing to an unusual amount of sickness, and a greater number of inmates.

Three deaths have occurred, -- those of Thomas White, aged 82 years, Isaac Littlefield, aged 56 years, and Edward Foley, aged 14 years.

Hereafter the board of Benjamin Veazie will be paid by his guardian, D. H. Bates. 1

The personal property of Wm. Wild, supported by the town at the State Lunatic Assylum, was taken possession of by the Over- seers of the poor, and appraised by the Auditors at seventy-five dollars, ($75.00.) We recommend that the town order them to be sold:

Jacob Veaźie has become heir to some property, which will re- lieve the town from his support for the present.

The Selectmen and Overseers of the Poor have kept their ac- counts very accurately, and as far as our knowledge extends, they have managed the affairs of the town with judgment and economy.

The cost of the bridge:at East Braintree, will exceed the esti- mate ($7.000), by three or four hundred dollars, owing to extra expense in laying the foundation of the piers. The severity of the Winter has prevented its completion ; one week of favorable weather would suffice to finish.

This work, and the defence of the town against the claim of Melvin Thayer, for damages received on account of alleged defect of highway, have increased the town debt from eighteen thou- sand four hundred and eighty-seven dollars and twenty-seven cents, ($18,487.27) to twenty-two thousand eight hundred and ninety-two dollars and fifty-seven cents, ($22,892.57).

The Treasurer presented vouchers for all money paid out. We find, however, that the several bills for repairs of school houses, stoves, and school furniture, have been paid from money appropri- ated by the town for the support of schools. This has been done in accordance with custom rather than with laws, which allows only the wages and board of the teacher, the cost of fuel, and the care of the school room.

By an inadvertence, twenty-two dollars ($22.00) were charged to the High School, which should have been charged to the eve- ning school.

Respectfully submitted, JOHN B. ARNOLD, ALVERDO MASON, Auditors. EDWARD I. HUMPHREY,

Braintree, Feb. 29, 1868.
