At the last annual town meeting the selectmen were chosen sur- veyors of highways, coupled with the vote that they should appoint one superintendent, outside of their Board, to superintend the re- pairs of highways and bridges. S. S. French was appointed. The town also voted that the committee chosen to take into considera- tion the best method of repairing highways should purchase a crusher, engine, and roller. The committee have made the pur- chase at a total cost of $1,854.01. The setting up of the same cost $211.27. The details of these expenditures are to be found in the surveyors' report. The selectmen have prepared about 425 tons of crushed stone, and repaired 37 rods of road on Washington Street, at a cost, as nearly as can be estimated, of $431. We also have on hand about 140 tons of crushed stone, ready for use the coming season.

These expenditures having been taken from the appropriation for the highways, left only about $1,500 for the general repairs. In consideration of this fact, we have therefore recommended a larger appropriation for the ensuing year.
