CHIEF ENGINEER'S REPORT.

TO THE SELECTMEN OP BRAINTREE :

Gentlemen, - I most respectfully submit the following report, showing the condition of the Fire Department, and a list of the fires during the year ending Feb. 1. 1881 : -

The department is under the control of a chief and seven assist- ant engineers, and'consists of two hand-engines with hose carriages attached, and one hook-and-ladder carriage. The companies are nearly full, and consist of one hundred and twenty-five volunteers.

HOUSES.

The several houses belonging to the department are in good condition.

We did not raise the towers on the two engine houses, as recom- mended by the Board last year.

After procuring suitable plans, we found that the appropriation was not sufficient to carry the same into effect, and having made some alterations which may prove satisfactory, we think it best to try them another year.

FIRE ENGINES.

Union, No. 1, is in good repair.

Butcher Boy, No. 2, has been thoroughly repaired the past year, and is in a good condition.

HOOK-AND-LADDER . CARRIAGE.

The Wampatuck Hook-and-Ladder Carriage should be painted this year.

HOSE.

There are belonging to the department 1,850 feet of leading hose ; 400 feet of rubber, good ; 500 feet of rubber, not reliable ; 500 feet of linen, very poor ; 400 feet of rubber-lined, very poor. There has been added 200 feet of new hose the past year, and 200 feet has been thrown out as unserviceable. We recommend that 600 feet of new hose be purchased the present year.

RESERVOIRS.

One new reservoir was built on Summer Street, in the south part of the town, the past year, which gives good satisfaction.

There are several places in town where the water in our river and ponds should be made available for fire purposes, and could be done at a very small expense.

We would especially recommend that some arrangements be made, if possible, with Naaman L. White, Esq., so that the water in his pond could be used in case of fire in that vicinity.

41

APPROPRIATION.

We recommend that there be appropriated by the town, for the year 1881, $1,600 : -
