The Chief Engineer of the Fire Department reports to the Town Clerk the following fires which occurred during the year 1889 :


March 23. Brush land of Hollis & Thayer. Damage, $75. Cause, accidental.


April 27. Cotton mill of heirs of E. A. Hollingsworth. Oc- cupant, B. F. Smith. Value of building, $500. Damage, $25 on building and $75 on contents. Fully covered by insurance. Cause, accidental.


May 8. Hennery of S. W. Hollis. Value of building, $200; of contents, $250. Total loss. No insurance. Cause, explosion of lamp.


July 13. Dwelling house of Alexander McGaw. Value of building, $600; of contents, $300. Damage to building, total loss ; to contents, $250. Insurance on building, $900; on contents, $300. Cause, explosion of a kerosene oil stove.

TOWN RECORDS.


NORFOLK, ss. To either of the constables of the town of Braintree, GREETING :


In the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, you are hereby required to notify and warn the inhabitants of the town of Braintree, qualified to vote in town affairs, to meet at the Town Hall, in said Braintree, on Monday, the fourth day of March, 1889, at eight o'clock in the forenoon, to act on the following articles, namely :


ARTICLE 1. To choose a Moderator to preside at said meeting.


ART. 2. To hear the report of the several town officers, and act thereon.


ART. 3. To determine the manner of repairing the highways and bridges for the ensuing year.


ART. 4. To choose all necessary town officers for the ensuing year, and also to vote on the following question, as required by Chap. 54 of the Acts of the year 1881, namely : "Shall licenses be granted for the sale of intoxicating liquors in this town ?"


ART. 5. To see what action the town will take in relation to hiring money for any purpose.


ART. 6. To raise and appropriate such sums of money as may be necessary to defray the expenses of the town for the ensuing year.


ART. 7. To see if the town will accept the jury list as made by the Selectmen.


ART. 8. To see if the town will vote an appropriation of $150, and pay the same to the General Sylvanus Thayer Post, G. A. R., for the purpose of assisting them in defraying the expenses of memorial services on Memorial Day.


ART. 9. To see how the town will vote to pay the members of the Fire Department.

ART. 10. To see if the town will vote to raise and appropriate such sums of money as may be needed to pay the interest on the water bonds and for the sinking fund established for the pay- ment of said bonds.


ART. 11. To see if the town will vote to charge interest on all taxes that remain unpaid after a certain date.


ART. 12. To see if the town will vote, in connection with the town of Weymouth, to enlarge the waterway at Smelt Brook, and appropriate money for the same.


ART. 13. To see if the town will take any action relating to sewerage or drainage.


ART. 14. To see if the town will elect six Trustees of the Thayer Public Library, in accordance with the provisions of Chap. 304 of the Acts and Resolves of the Legislature of 1888.


ART. 15. To see if the town will vote to lay a new floor in the Town Hall, and appropriate. money for the same.


ART. 16. To see if the town will vote to pave the gutters on Monatiquot Heights, and appropriate money for the same.


ART. 17. To see if the town will appoint a committee to consider the best method for lighting the streets and public buildings of the town, and to report thereon at any town meeting held thereafter.


ART. 18. To see if the town will take into consideration the matter of enlarging the waterway at Cart Bridge, and to take such action thereon as may be deemed necessary.


ART. 19. To see if the town will accept that portion of Tremont street, extending from Taylor street to Central avenue, as laid out by the Selectmen, and appropriate money therefor.


ART. 20. To see if the town will accept Bowditch street, leading from Front street, in the East part of the town, as now laid out. 4


ART. 21. To see if the town will vote to change the title Thayer Public Library to Braintree Free Public Library.


ART. 22. To see if the town will vote to purchase two hook and ladder trucks, remodel the engine houses in the East and

South parts of the town fit for the occupancy of the same, and appropriate the sum of $3000, to defray expense of same.


ART. 23. To see if the town will widen, straighten and build retaining walls on Quincy avenue, and raise and appropriate money for the same.


ART. 24. To see if the town will choose a committee to select a location and get plans and specifications for the erection of a High School building in the North part of the town.


ART. 25. To see if the town will authorize the Selectmen to compensate B. J. Loring, Jr., for losses incurred by him while in performance of his duties as constable of the town.


ART. 26. To see if the town will sell a strip of land on the easterly line of the poor farm about fifteen feet in width on the street, running back to nothing about fifty-five feet from said street.


ART. 27. To choose, in accordance with the provisions of Chap. 123 of the Acts of the year 1877, three discreet persons by ballot, whose duty it shall be to inspect the Monatiquot river, to cause the regulations respecting fisheries therein to be carried into effect, and to prosecute all violations thereof.


ART. 28. To see if the town will accept Standish avenue as laid out by the Selectmen, and appropriate $150 to build the same.


ART. 29. To see if the town will accept Myrtle street, Spruce street and Vine street, as shown upon a plan of land belonging to Edward Reed, made by Charles A. Pierson, in September, 1887, and as laid out by the Selectmen.


ART. 30. To see if the town will accept the new road leading from a point on Middle street, opposite the residence of George Wales, to a point on Union street, opposite the residence of John Rennie, as laid out by the Selectmen, and appropriate money to build the same.


ART. 31. To see if the town will vote to build a sidewalk on Hancock and Washington streets extending from the residence of Michael Brandley to that of the heirs of John H. Thayer, and raise and appropriate money for the same.

ART. 32. To see if the town will vote to build an armory for Company K, and choose a committee and appropriate money therefor.


ART. 33. To choose any committee or hear the report of any committee, and act thereon.


You are to give notice of this meeting by posting true and attested copies of this warrant in not less than nine public places in this town, seven days, at least, before the time of said meeting, and by publishing once in the Braintree Observer.


Hereof fail not, but make return of this warrant, with your doings thereon, to the Town Clerk, before the time of said meeting.

In accordance with the foregoing warrant the meeting was called to order, and the warrant read by the Town Clerk.


Ansel O. Clark was appointed to check the list, and sworn by the Town Clerk.


ARTICLE 1. The ballot having been taken by the use of the check-list, it was found that Francis A. Hobart had been unani- mously chosen Moderator, and he was sworn by the Town Clerk.


Article 2 was laid on the table.


ART. 3. Voted, That the highways and bridges shall be re- paired for the ensuing year, under the direction of three Survey -. ors of Highways.


ART. 4. Voted, To proceed to the election of the following town officers on one ballot, namely: Town .Clerk ; Treasurer; three Selectmen, who shall be Assessors, Overseers of the Poor, and Surveyors of Highways; one Water Commissioner for the term of three years; two School Committee for the term of three years ; three Auditors ; three Fence Viewers; and twelve Constables ; and also at the same time vote on the question : " Shall licenses be granted for the sale of intoxicating liquors in this town ?"


Nathaniel F. Hunt was appointed to take charge of the box for the reception of ballots on the question of license, and sworn by the Town Clerk.


Polls were declared open at 8h. 12m. A. M.


Moderator appointed as tellers to assort and count the votes : Charles C. Mellen, Douglas A. Brooks, Ibrahim Morrison, Albert R. Hobart and John M. Beals; and they were sworn by the Town Clerk.

For Town Clerk, -Scattering, 1; Samuel A. Bates, 634; and he was declared elected, and sworn by the Moderator.


Town Treasurer, - Scattering, 1; Andrew J. Bates, 639; and he was declared elected, and sworn by the Town Clerk.


Selectmen, Assessors, Overseers of the Poor, and Surveyors of Highways, - Scattering, 3; J. Franklin Bates, 283; Ansel O. Clark, 637; Nathaniel F. Hunt, 634; R. Allen Gage, 348; and Ansel O. Clark, Nathaniel F. Hunt and R. Allen Gage were de- clared elected, and sworn by the Town Clerk.


School Committee for three years, - Rebecca H. Morrison, 634; Ann M. Brooks, 633; and they were declared elected, and afterwards accepted the office.


Constables,-Scattering, 12; Howard M. Hobart, 638; Joshua M. Bunker, 638; Gilman D. Whittaker, 638; Albert Hobart, 638; Joseph S. Marsh, 638; Thomas Downey, 637; James A. Rey- nolds, 634; Edwin L. Curtis, 631; Horace Faxon, 629; B. J. Lor- ing, Jr., 625; Henry B. Vinton, 622; John Kelley, 594; and they were declared elected, and Howard M. Hobart, Albert Hobart, Thomas Downey, James A. Reynolds, Edwin L. Curtis, Horace Faxon, B. J. Loring, Jr., and John Kelley were after- wards sworn by the Town Clerk. The others declined to accept the office.


Auditors, - Scattering, 1; George D. Willis, 639; John M. Beals, 636; Alverdo Mason, 626; and they were declared elected, and were sworn by the Town Clerk.


Fence Viewers, - Scattering, 1; Freeman G. Crosby, 640; John V. Scollard, 636; J. Franklin Bates, 627; and they were declared elected, and Freeman G. Crosby and John V. Scollard were sworn by the Town Clerk.


J. Franklin Bates having declined, Josiah Penniman was elected to fill the vacancy, and he was sworn by the Town Clerk.


Water Commissioner for three years, - Scattering, 1; Joel F. Sheppard, 270; John V. Scollard, 358; and John V. Scollard was declared elected, and 'accepted the office.


"Shall licenses be granted for the sale of intoxicating liquors in this town ?"


Whole number of ballots, 369. Yes, 90; No, 279.

There being two John Kelleys upon the voting list, it was voted that the "John Kelley of Quincy Avenue," is understood as having been elected Constable.


Conrad Mischler was elected Constable by ballot, in place of Henry B. Vinton, declined, and sworn by the Town Clerk.


Voted, To choose three Measurers of Grain.


Willie J. Loring and J. Marcus Arnold were chosen, and sworn by the Town Clerk.


J. Francis White was also chosen, and afterwards declined.


Voted, To choose four Weighers of Hay.


Martin L. Tupper, J. Marcus Arnold, Peter B. Lowson and James H. Finegan were chosen, and sworn by the Town Clerk.


Voted, To choose three Measurers of Lumber.


Martin L. Tupper, Benjamin J. Loring, Jr., and George H. Hol- brook were chosen, and sworn by the Town Clerk.


Voted, To choose one Measurer of Leather.


Albion C. Drinkwater was chosen, and sworn by the Town Clerk.


Voted, To choose Five Measurers of Wood.


J. Marcus Arnold, Martin L. Tupper, Edward J. Carroll, Ed- ward M. Wight and William Allen were chosen, and sworn by the Town Clerk.


Voted, To choose three Field Drivers.


John W. Mulcahey, William C. Daniels and Walter E. Mor- rison were chosen, but all declined.


Voted, That one Pound-keeper be appointed by the Selectmen.
