Report of Board of Health
To the Citizens of Braintree :-
The Board of Health submit the following report for the year ending Dec. 31, 1906.
The Board organized April 19, 1906, and elected C. M. Marstin, M. D., Chairman, and Edward W. Hobart, Clerk.
GENERAL WORK.
In our last year's report we spoke of the need of a system for the collection of garbage. Owing to the inability of many of the citizens to dispose of their garbage the Board felt com- pelled to take the matter into their own hands and furnish a team to collect the same, which was done the 1st of May, 1906. Mr. James O. Sypher was employed to collect and sell the swill, which he has performed to the satisfaction of the Board. With the growth of the Town and the many expenses which we have been obliged to meet through increased Legislative Acts we have far exceeded our appropriation, and would say that the work which (must) be done will require a much larger appropriation than has been made in the past.
VITAL STATISTICS.
The number of deaths in Braintree during the past year 1906 was 110. Males 61, females 49.

And that the sum of three hundred dollars ($300) be appro- priated to pay the firemen 30 cents per hour when at work at fires.
And that the sum of seven hundred dollars ($700) be ap- propriated for the general use of the Fire Department.
I would recommend that the sum of five hundred be ap- propriated for the purchase of new hose.
And that there be an appropriation of one hundred and
165
seventy-five dollars for a new fire alarm box at the corner of Howard and Hayward streets.
I would recommend that the Town place a telephone in each of the three engineers' houses.
And I would recommend that the Town appoint a com- mittee to investigate the condition of the different fire stations in Town and report at some adjourned meeting.
In conclusion, I wish to thank Engineers Hill and Cottrell for their hearty support; also the officers and men of the Fire Department for the faithful manner in which they performed their duty.
(Signed)
F. O. WHITMARSH,
Chief Engineer of Braintree Fire Department.

Report of the Trustees of Thayer Public Library
In submitting their report for the year 1906 the Trustees have taken the following from the records of the Secretary.
At their meeting held today the Trustees of the Thayer Public Library unanimously desire to express their high estima- tion of the character and services of their late associate, Nathaniel H. Hunt, recently deceased. Mr. Hunt was the first Trustee chosen by the town, and from the time of his appoint- ment to his death was continued in office as such, and for many years was treasurer of the Board.
In all his relations to those having to do with the Trust, as well as in all his relations to his co-trustees, he always man- ifested the deepest interest in every matter connected with the Library, and we all feel keenly our loss.
Let these memoranda be placed by our Secretary on the records of today's proceedings and as part of the same.
Braintree, Oct. 18th, 1906.
The Board further records with sincere sorrow the death of Mr. Richard L. Arnold, for many years Assistant Librarian, devoted to his work, of conspicuous fidelity, wise, sympathetic and alert.
The Library thus loses two who have been long associated with it and who have served it well.
The report of the Librarian and of the Treasurer of the Board are herewith submitted.
FREDERICK R. GRIFFIN. HENRY A. JOHNSON. BENJ. F. DYER. WM. C. HARDING.
