A team of pupils from the commercial department won the interurban contest in typewriting held at the Kimball school last spring. The cup won at that time is now in our trophy room.
I wish to take this occasion to express most sincere thanks to both parents and pupils for their loyal co-operation and support without which any school cannot maintain its standing. I wish to bespeak the interest and co-operation of all the citizens of Chelmsford, especially all' who in any way come in personal contact with the school and its work.
I desire to express my appreciation of the loyal support I have l'e- ceived from the teachers and I wish to thank you and the School Com- mittee for the hearty co-operation and constant aid which I have received in behalf of the school.
Respectfully submitted,
LESTER F. ALDEN, Principal.

REPORT OF SUPERVISOR OF MUSIC
Mr. Roscoe C. Frame,
Superintendent of Schools,
Chelmsford, Mass.
Dear Sir :
One of the great aims in teaching school music is to train the pupil to read at sight, and marked improvement is shown along this line. Special attention has been given this year to song reading and even in some of the third grades the pupils have read songs surprisingly well.
In grade one, more time than usual has been given to rote song singing, leaving notation until later in the year.
The enrollment in the Boys' Glee club is 35 and in the Girls' Glee club it is 70.
The instrumentation of the High School orchestra is four violins, one clarinet, four cornets, piano and drums. With the proceeds of the High School Concerts, we purchased a bass drum, snare drum and a set of bells. The second annual High School Concert was given last April. A choral fantasia from the opera "Faust" was sung by the High School chorus. The orchestra and glee clubs gave several numbers. Another concert is to be given this spring.
The chorus work at High School is greatly handicapped and the only solution to the problem is an assembly hall.
Last April, I attended the eastern supervisors' conference which was held in Springfield. This was very inspiring and instructive.
I wish to thank all for their kind co-operation.
Respectfully submitted,
M. MARION ADAMS, Supervisor of Music.
REPORT OF SUPERVISOR OF DRAWING
Mr. Roscoe L. Frame,
Superintendent of Schools,
Chelmsford, Mass.
Dear Sir :-
The following quotation expresses the aim of the Art Department dur- ing the past year :
"Ornament is the art of everyday. Everyday, and all day long we breath the atmosphere of ornament. There is no escape from its influence. Good or bad it pervades every object with which our daily doings bring us in contact. The question of ornament is, therefore, neither insignificant nor one that has significance only for the wealthy few. Neither is it a matter that concerns only those who take some interest in art, since we are all of us. however little inclined to the arts, compelled to ornament our dwellings, our belongings and our persons."
10
Guiding the child to recognize and create good ornament has been our aim. This we have worked for in applied design, color study, printing and pos- ter work.
We have correlated drawing with geography and with the Health De- partment, by making posters and sand tables.
An Arts and Crafts class of advanced students, has been started at the High school. We hope in time to make this class worth while.
For the work accomplished a great deal of credit is due the teachers, who have never failed to give their heartiest co-operation.
Sincerely, LYDIA M. DESORMEAUX
Drawing Supervisor.
REPORT OF SCHOOL PHYSICIAN
Superintendent of Schools :
Sir :- Inspection of schools for this year showed a considerable number of cases of enlarged tonsils and adenoids; a good many cases of skin diseases ; many diseased teeth and a variety of other affections. Suggestions have been acted upon and the co-operation of parents in infectious diseases is very good indeed.
Respectfully, ARTHUR G. SCOBORIA, M. D., Chelmsford.
