REPORT OF TOWN PHYSICIAN.

To the Overseers of the Poor :

Gentlemen,- I am pleased, in presenting my first annual report, to say that we have had no epidemic during the year. Many of the inmates are advanced in years and suffer from the results of debility, which requires constant care and nursing.

Mr. and Mrs. Nickerson have performed their duties with their usual faithfulness, and have shown their willingness in the performance of extra duties.

I am pleased, gentlemen, to acknowledge your kindness to me during the past year.

Respectfully,

AMOS B. PAUN.

REPORT OF MUNICIPAL LIGHTING PLANT.

The eighth annual report of the Municipal Lighting Plant is herewith presented to the citizens of Middleboro.

The sales of gas and electricity during 1901 were as fol- lows : gas, $3,595.78 ; commercial incandescent, $4,715.14 ; domestic incandescent, $1,596.39 ; commercial arc,$1,506.90 ; total, $11,414.12.

This is an increase of $571.54 over last year, the gain on gas being $225.67, and on electricity $345.87.

The gain on gas is larger than last year while that on electricity is smaller, mainly on account of the fact that we are now lighting practically every store in town; so that about the only chance for an important increase in the busi- ness has been in the line of house lighting, which does not increase the income so rapidly.

Since January 1, 1901, a five per cent. discount has been given on all bills over one dollar paid before the twentieth of the month.

This has been appreciated and taken advantage of to the extent of $365.70. It causes the money to come in more promptly and gives the customer the benefit of a slight . reduction in price.

The quantity of electricity generated during the year, exclusive of series arc lighting, was 100,044 kilo-watt hours and the gas made 1,600,375 cubic feet.

60

During the latter part of the year the electric station was run later in the morning than usual, especially on cloudy days, on a few occasions as late as noon. This has been approved by the customers, especially during the holidays.

There are 229 customers connected, an increase of 12, of which 48 use gas only, 118 electricity only, and 63 use both gas and electricity.

At the annual meeting in March an appropriation was made for the purchase and installation of two gas engines, as the experience of the past two or three years had indi- cated that the water supply could not be depended on during the greater part of the year.

After investigating the various makes of engines, it was decided to purchase two of 125 H. P. each from the Standard Automatic Gas Engine Company, of Oil City, Pa., their engines having been seen at work in their shops and also in practical operation in electric railway and lighting plants.

It was expected that these engines would be delivered during the summer, but the company was obliged to shut down nearly three months during and immediately following the strike in the iron district. This delayed their other orders as well as ours, so that under the pressure of a heavy bonus they were induced to deliver the engines to other parties.

A pair of engines are now (January ) practically completed for us, and it is fully expected that before this report is in the hands of the citizens one or both will be on the ground.

We have been especially favored by the large amount of water available during the autumn and winter, much more than for several years ; so that while we have not been able

61

to operate as cheaply or to give the satisfaction we desired, we have had much less trouble than during the previous two years.

During the summer the dynamos were moved further toward the eastern end of the station, a stone foundation seven feet deep was laid for the engines and one post sup- porting the second floor was removed and a truss put in its place.

The central section of the old 32-inch shaft was replaced by one five inches in diameter and supplied with modern self-oiling floor stands and the necessary friction clutch pulleys. The belting has also been purchased, so that there will be but little delay in setting up the engines.

. A condensed report of receipts and expenditures follows.
