REPORT OF THE TOWN CLERK.


The following is an abstract from the records, showing the action taken by the town at the various meetings held dur- ing the year 1902 :


ANNUAL MEETING, MARCH 3, 1902.


Called to order by the Clerk at 8 A.M. Alvin C. Howes was chosen Moderator and sworn.


Voted to accept the list of jurors as recommended by the Selectmen, after removing the names of Emery F. Atwood and Edmund S. Russell and adding the names of Howard B. Carver, Thomas T. Westgate and James M. Clark.


Voted to accept the provisions of Sections 29 to 32, Chap- ter 102, Revised Laws, relative to licensing junk dealers.


Chose the following as Field Drivers : George S. Clark, Amos Buckman, James A. Burgess, William L. Faxon, Augustus H. Soule, Clarence C. Porter, Sylvanus W. Bump, Arad R. Dunham.


Voted that the yards of Field Drivers be town pounds so long as they remain in office, provided they be chosen Pound Keepers.


Voted that the same persons chosen Field Drivers be chosen Pound Keepers.

Voted to authorize the Treasurer, under the direction of the Selectmen, to hire $45,000 in anticipation of taxes.


Voted that the proceeds of dog and other licenses be ap- propriated for the use of the Public Library.


Voted that the Committee on Drainage, Lyman P. Thomas, Joseph E. Beals and Bert J. Allan, be authorized to con- struct a drain on Vine street from a point near C. W. Max- im's mill to connect with the drain on old Centre street, and to report at the adjourned meeting the probable cost of com- pleting the drainage system on the West side.


Voted to build a new schoolhouse on Pleasant street, and the chair appoint a committee of five to submit plans and es- timates for the house at the adjourned meeting. Committee : P. W. Keith, A. H. Soule, W. H. Southworth, Bert J. Allan and William C. Litchfield.


Voted that the School Committee be authorized to build a schoolhouse in the Soule district.


Voted to sell the herrings for one year; to locate three fishing places, one at Muttock, one at the Star mills, one at the electric light dam, and sell the first two, to be paid for within ten days of the time of sale.


D. D. Sullivan, auctioneer, sold the right to fish as above to C. N. Simmons for $206.


Voted that the money received for damages at the gas house be applied to reduce the amount voted to be secured as a loan for the purchase of gas engines to the amount of the damages received.


Voted to accept the provisions of Section 335, Chapter 11,

Revised Laws, providing for the choosing the Town Clerk for a term of three years.


Voted not to maintain a Chief of Police this year.


Voted to pay the expense of a night watch for the ensuing year.

Voted to place the building of both houses in the hands of the School Committee ; that they prepare plans and specifi- cations for these buildings, advertise and let the contracts to the lowest responsible bidder.


Voted to instruct the town officials to secure an extension of time on the $8,000 note due this year.


Voted that the Selectmen be instructed not to pay from the appropriation for soldiers' relief any bill for the medical attendance or services of a nurse, unless the visit of the physician or the attendance of the nurse had been previously ordered or authorized by one or more of the Board of Select- men.


The committee reported that the drainage scheme for the west side will cost $3,000. The same committee was directed to do the work as contemplated in the plans for the abolition of the grade crossings.


Voted to assess, in addition to the State and county taxes, the sum of $72,249.26 on the polls and estates of the town.
