An "Activity Period" has replaced the former Club period and has proved more satisfactory from many angles. It was well that this had been reorganized before the platoon changes. The operetta in April, "Fiesta Americana" and Promotion Exercises in June, were most suc- cessful as cooperative endeavors of the Music and Speech Departments. Mrs. Williams did outstanding work with the Orchestra, and many spec- tators were amazed at the appearance of the Bates Band at the annual Armistice Parade this year, when, in spite of the loss of uniforms and re-made program, the Band continued due to Mr. Churchill's willingness to meet them mornings, and the interest of the P .- T. A. in arranging an interim uniform. Mrs. Matheson, Supervisor of Art, assisted greatly with Scenery Panels, which, unfortunately were lost in the fire. A choir, under Miss McNeil's direction, was organized last year, and is continuing at present.

Naturally, the personnel of Bates School thrilled to the vote of the Town last March to build a new Junior High School and all had cooper- ated with the Maintenance Department to leave the Bates School in the best possible condition for an entering elementary school group. Every department cooperated in an inventory, with Miss Martin, our School Secretary, as coordinator, and a reclassification of materials anticipating these two moves. It was indeed gratifying that the Town Meeting voted unanimously to set aside the insurance monies from Bates School toward a new elementary building. Many of the faculty who lost much personal property were reassured by this vote. The interest of Mr. Enos of the maintenance department in the transfer of usable materials has been greatly appreciated.

Again with thanks to the Administration officials, and with the hope that the "Bates School Spirit" will continue even as our unit is "dis- placed", I respectfully submit this report.

Conclusion

It is impossible to cover an entire year of school activities, problems, and progress in an abbreviated report of this kind. Sufficient space can- not be devoted to "giving credit where credit is due" nor due praise given to those who have done much "beyond the call of duty."

To all, the School Committee and School Personnel, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation for the cooperation and loyalty that makes educational progress possible.

J. STEARNS CUSHING, Superintendent of Schools.
