PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT, 1950

During the year 1950, the library hours were changed and the library is now open on the following days:

Tuesday - 3 P.M. to 8 P.M. Friday - 6 P.M. to 9 P.M. Saturday - 3 P.M. to 5 P.M.

The trustees hope to reach a greater number of readers by increasing the number of hours per week.

The second week of November was observed as National Book Week for Children, with exhibits for all ages. Also, many new books for adults were shown. As usual, the display was in the balcony. An interesting feature of the exhibit was a collection of very old children's books. Some were over one hundred years old. They were loaned by Mrs. George E. Gifford.

Pupils of the Howe-Manning School have been aided in their selection of books to obtain State Certificates for reading. Five de- posits of books were placed in the school rooms for grades 4 - 8.

Holten High School students have secured books for supplement- ary readings in connection with English and History courses. Students have also made good use of the many reference books on the library shelves.

The following magazines were in the reading room.

American Magazine Home Craftsman

American Boy Jack and Jill

American Girl Life

American Home

McCall's Needlework Nature Magazine

Better Homes and Gardens Bird Life Child Life

National Geographic

Our Dumb Animals

Country Gentleman

SELECTMEN'S REPORT

SELECTMEN'S REPORT

To the Citizens of Middleton:

The Board of Selectmen submit for your approval its annual re- port of activities for the year ending December 31st, 1950.

Meetings have been held each Tuesday evening at 8:00 p.m. at the Town Hall except during the months of July and August when meetings were held the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. The pressure of business this past year has made it necessary to hold' many special meetings to transact business.

As you are all well aware the National and World situation has made it necessary for us to rebuild our Civilian Defense agencies. This year we appointed Mr. Arthur Doane of No. Main Street as our Co- ordinator of Civilian Defense. He has been very successful in gather- ing volunteer groups to undertake this work. Any assistance given him by the Townspeople we know will be greatly appreciated.

During the past year we have spent much time making a complete survey of the Town's insurance problem. We found where the Real Estate owned by the Town was under insured and were able to secure savings in some cases where combining of policies were possible. The following is a list of property and values which will bring this problem to your attention.

The valuations as estimated by the various Town Dept. on the contents of building were as follows:

Town Hall

$1,000.00

Fire House

1,500.00

Electric Light Department

1,000.00

Fixtures

5,000.00

Stock

Board of Assessors

1,000.00

Fixtures

School Cafeteria

4,000.00

Other Contents

20,000.00

Total

$33,500.00

At the present time, the total insurance carried on the contents is $6,500.00 on an 80% co-insurance basis.
