Report of the Board of Selectmen.

To the Citizens of the Town of Saugus :

We have the honor to submit the following report for the year 1905.

Incidentals.

We deem it advisable to call attention to several unusual expenditures during the past year paid out of the Selectmen's Incidentals.

The appropriation for repairs on town buildings and grounds. not proving sufficient for such work as it was imperative to do in order to economically care for the town property, the follow- ing items were paid for out of the appropriation for Incidentals :

Repairs on retaining wall, East Saugus school $158 85 Repairs and new fence at North Saugus and East Saugus school 142 56

Pump, North Saugus

23 80

Cesspool, Town Hall

96 45

Repairs, East Saugus hose house

219 84

Gates at Felton school

67 00

$708 50

In addition to the above as. unusual, we would mention the following :

Extra legal services, briefs, metropolitan park tax $125 00 Forest fires, $445.10, an excess over 1904 of 334 34

New Town by-laws (printing) · · 60 00 · Gypsy and brown tail moths, on public grounds 65 00

Settlement, George Sewell

100 00

.

SELECTMEN'S REPORT. 16g

It will be seen from the above that if the item alone for repairs on Public Buildings and Grounds, $708.50, had been paid from the ;usual appropriation for that purpose there would have remained that much more unexpended balance of the Selectmen's Incidentals. It seems to us wise, when any considerable sum is required for a specific purpose, that a special appropriation be made for the same, rather than to pay for it from the Select- men's Incidentals. We, therefore, recommend that in the future special appropriations be made for the Water Tax, cover- ing the use of hydrants and drinking fountains, which is a fixed charge, amounting for the next five years to $579 per annum, and for the Tax Collector's compensation, making a correspond- ing deduction in the appropriation for Incidentals.

Highways and Bridges.

This has been a very busy department the past year. In addition to the spring and fall cleaning, the following streets have been re-surfaced : Chestnut street, Lincoln avenue from Bristow street to Central street, Cliftondale square, Walnut street, North Saugus, from Holliday's Corner to the North Saugus School-house. In Oaklandvale, Main and Howard streets from the Bennett estate to the Penney estate have been . regraded and the bridge at the junction of Vine street and High- land avenue has been widened and rebuilt. There has also been built 2,200 feet of fence in various parts of the Town, and minor repairs made in many places too numerous to mention. For full particulars see report of Superintendent of Streets.
