But one death lias occurred in the House during the past year, and this was preceded by a very brief illness, while the general healthı and condition of the other inmates has been good, with the exception of a person admitted near the close of the year, who was then too seriously ill to admit the hope of his recovery.

A special effort has been made during the year for the improvement of the farm, and the results liave fully justified the outlay made, and we believe that by persevering effort in the same direction, its products may be largely increased with the expenditure of a small annual sum of money.

The Almshouse and out-buildings have been thoroughly . repainted during the year at an expense of two hundred and

forty-five dollars and seventy-nine cents ; but this item has not been charged to the expense of the support of the poor, for the reason that an annual rent of three hundred dollars is charged to this account, which with the ordinary repairs and furnish- ing of the House, has heretofore constituted the amount charged for the use of farm and buildings. The number of paupers in the house at the commencement of the year was twenty-seven ; the whole number during the year (excluding transient inmates,) was thirty-four ; the number at the close of the year eighteen ; and the average number twenty-three and one-third. The cost per week for the support of the poor in the house has been one dollar and ninety-eight cents for each . pauper.

The expense for assistance to the poor out of the Almshouse has been twenty-three hundred and eighty-eight dollars and thirty-one cents.
