ENGINEERS' REPORT.
To the Selectmen of the Town of Weymouth :
Gentlemen, - The Board of Engineers of the Weymouth Fire Department submits their report for the year 1880.
The number of the Board is the same as reported last year, viz., ten.
Z. L. BICKNELL, Chief. GEORGE W. BATES, Clerk.
GEORGE G. FRENCH,
JOHN R. H. WILLIAMS,
GEORGE L. NEWTON,
SAMUEL S. SPEAR,
STEPHEN CAIN,
GEORGE F. MAYNARD,

.
These are in good repair, and can be relied upon to do good service when needed; in addition to these, there are two hand engines, the Amazon and the Rescue, which, we believe, it would be for the town's interest to sell, and that the proceeds be used to
56
purchase a hook and ladder truck to be stationed in Ward One. The steamer has proved to be all it was recommended, and is a valuable addition to the department ; to make it more efficient, a larger hose carriage is needed, and we recommend that the town take such action as may be necessary to procure one.
Three hundred feet of new leading hose has been purchased, and there is now in use by the several companies 3,200 feet of rubber and cotton hose that is nearly new, and 1,500 feet that is much. worn. We recommend the purchase of 1,000 feet of new.
The buildings, with the exception of the one in Ward Five, are in good repair.
Three new reservoirs have been built, at a cost of $1,120, viz. : -
One on Broad, near Middle Street $230 00
One on Washington, near Hunt Street 440 00
One on Union Street .
450 00
$1,120 00
The remaining reservoirs are in good repair, and mostly filled with water.
There has been 14 fires in town to which the department was called, viz. : -
Jan. 2. Robert Paine's house
Damage, $1,200
Jan. 3. James Dee, house .

The department has been called out at other times to fires in neighboring towns, and in every instance they have responded promptly and worked faithfully ; and we take this opportunity to acknowledge our indebtedness to the ex-members of the active company for their valuable assistance at the burning of. Mr. Beal's stable.
57
We recommend that the town appropriate for the year 1881, $2,600, viz. : -
