ENGINEERS' REPORT.

A

To the Selectmen of the Town of Weymouth:

GENTLEMEN, - The Board of Engineers of the Fire Department submit their report for the year 1881.

The apparatus in use and its location are as follows, viz. : -

Steamer No. 1 .

Ward 3

Conqueror, No. 1, hand engine .

These are in good order, and with the exception of the Rocket, are in charge of good companies ready for duty when occasions requires. In addition to these is the Amazon in Ward Three, which is not in serviceable condition, and which it is proposed to sell at the first favorable opportunity. There has been purchased during the year a new hose carriage for steamer No. 1 and a new hook-and-ladder truck for Ward One, which add much to the effi- ciency of the department, one thousand feet of leading hose was purchased, making now in use about four thousand feet of good, and one thousand feet of poor; we recommend the purchase of one thousand feet of new hose. A new house has been built in Ward Five, and is commodious, convenient, and an ornament to the town ; the houses in other wards are in good repair, with the ex- ception that some of them need painting, and all should be sheathed in the lower stories, that they may be warmer in the winter. Two

57

reservoirs have been built, - one under the new building in Ward Five, and one under the Gen. Putnam house in Ward Four, - and are filled from the buildings. There are many localities in town where it would be difficult to obtain water should a fire occur ; but we would call special attention to Washington Square, Weymouth Landing, and vicinity ; should a fire like the one Oct. 6 get well started, with springs low and the tide out, it would be a difficult matter to stop it. We would recommend a special appropriation of $500 to make provision for water in that locality. All of the reservoirs are in good repair and well supplied with water.

The number of fires in town to which the department was called was nineteen, viz. :.-

The promptness and efficiency of the department have been the means of saving a large amount of property, and in most instances the fire was confined to the building in which it commenced.

Oct. 22, a parade of the entire department was had at South Weymouth, with a trial of the steamer, hand engines, and hook-

and-ladder trucks. The appearance of the several companies in line was very fine, and their working of the several machines and trucks gave evidence of their being well disciplined. The inhabi- tants of Weymouth can congratulate themselves in having a Fire Department composed of citizens who take pride in making it what it is, an honor to the town.

We recommend that the town appropriate, for the year 1882, $3,100, viz. : -

For hose .

$1,100

For general expenses and repairs 1,500

For water supply, Ward Three . 500
