AUDITORS' REPORT.

As Auditors of the town, and at the request of the Overseers of the Poor, we visited. on Jan. 1, 1884, the almshouse, and took an inventory of the stock and materials found there belonging to the town, a copy of which is included in the report of the Over- seers of the Poor. We also examined carefully all parts of the house, and are pleased to be able express our satisfaction at the excellent condition, good order, and cleanliness in which we found it. The rooms are well kept and heated, and the inmates, as far as we could judge, properly cared for.

We have also examined the town Treasurer's accounts from Feb. 12, 1883, the date of the last auditing, to Jan. 1, 1884, and find them correctly cast and properly vouched, with the following result :

Balance in the Treasurer's hands, Feb. 12, 1883 $12,802 67

Receipts from all sources 154,577 42 ·

$167,380 09

Payments

166,285 23

Balance in the Treasurer's hands, Jan. 1, 1884 . $1,094 86

On comparison with the books of the Selectmen, we find also, that there were outstanding orders, drawn since the last auditors' report, and unpaid Jan. 1, 1884, amounting to $9,835.46.

We have noticed with much pleasure the thorough and systematic manner in which the books of the two boards, the Selectmen, and Overseers of the Poor, have been kept during the past year. The importance of the town and the magnitude of its financial inter- ests render it absolutely necessary that the system, so successfully inaugurated, should be continued by a competent person, and we earnestly recommend its continuance.

We also indorse the recommendation of previous committees, that the same method be extended to cover the books of the

105

Treasurer, since no system can be considered complete or satisfac- tory that does not contain in itself the means of protection from ordinary errors.

Respectfully submitted,

ELIAS RICHARDS, GILBERT NASH,

Auditors.
