REPORT OF THE PARK COMMISSIONERS.
FOR THE YEAR ENDING DEC. 31, 1896.
The area of land set aside by the town for park purposes re- mains as last reported, and comprises Webb Park at the Landing, Beals Park and Great Hill Park at North Weymouth. At present Webb Park and Great Hill Park are simply land in the rough, reserved for park purposes, to be developed later, as the needs of citizens for open play grounds, may be more pronounced. Beals Park is more finished, and is maintained each year in good condi- tion at the expense of Mr. Beals. The amount expended by him the past year being about $25. The large amount of wild and unoccupied land in our town, over which the inhabitants are prac- tically free to roam at their own sweet will, leave little to be desired in the way of supplying by the town further opportunities for recreation in the open air and if this condition of things was to remain permanent, the Department of Public Parks might possibly be abolished, but as Weymouth is sure to become more densely populated in the future, it would seem to be the part of wisdom, now, to take steps to provide for the wants of our citi- zens of the 20th century, at least to the extent of securing and re- serving desirable tracts of land, which after being secured, may remain in a state of nature until wanted. This land can be secured now for a small sum of money, whereas if the purchase is postponed some years hence it will take a large amount to buy it, and it may also be so disfigured by occupants, as to seriously damage it for park purposes.
Great HIIl Park is on the eve of developement, and the coming year will no doubt witness considerable activity there. The town will be asked at the annual meeting to appropriate sufficient money to build a carriage road to the summit, and in co-operation with the heirs of the late Wm. L. Bradley, lay out a liberal tract to

crown the top of the hill on which will be set the Adams monument, which is to commemorate the first settlement in the town in the year 1622. Mr. Adams who is now in Europe, will return in May, and will then no doubt go to work in earnest to mature his plans for the monument and have them promptly carried out, so that by another fall, we may see this historic spot suitably marked, and forever set aside as a spot, which by its association, will attract the attention of the students of History, and be of interest not only to the inhabitants of the town, but of visitors from foreign parts.
In conclusion we invite suggestions from citizens having refer- ence to extending the park area, also invite gifts of land or money from liberal minded citizens, for Park purposes or improvemeuts.
ELIAS S. BEALS, LOUIS A. COOK, WILLIAM H. CLAPP, Park Commissioners of Weymouth.
