REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF STREETS.
To the Board of Selectmen of Weymouth.
GENTLEMEN : I herewith submit my report for the year ending December 31, 1896.
PLEASANT STREET.
Pleasant street from a point in front of the engine house and running in a southerly direction -1,070 feet, has had the surface removed to the depth of 8 inches, and replaced by a body of stone taken from the neighboring gravel pits. These stones were not crushed, nor were they properly screened, as it would add con- siderable more to the cost. The average width of the street is 21 feet.
In addition to the grading of the street, there were 72 yards of gutter laid, with the common field stone.
The material taken from the street was placed on some of the side streets, and by so doing we have been able to grade them with much less expense than we could have done if we had been obliged to haul the gravel any distance.
CURTIS AVENUE.
Curtis avenue was graded with the gravel "taken from Pleasant street" about 500 feet in length and the sidewalk about 800 feet.
UNION STREET.
Union street sidewalk was graded on the easterly side 1,000 feet, and several loads of gravel were used to repair the other side.
70
BROAD STREET.
Broad street from Lincoln square to Webb street was done in the same manner, only the street was dug out to the depth of 12 inches. This was considered necessary on account of the poor foundation. The gravel from this street was carted to some of the neighbor- ing streets, and made good work. The length of this piece of work was 970 feet, and 20 feet in width. 319 feet of curbstone was set, and 150 yards of gutter paved.
WASHINGTON STREET.
Washington street from Lincoln square to a point near the police station 280 feet has been graveled, and 58 feet of curb- stone set, and 24 yards of gutter paved.
ENGINE HOUSE.
Engine house entrance has been paved with granite blocks, covering a space of 120 yards. The drinking fountain that stood in Lincoln square has been removed and another one placed in front of the police station.
PHILLIPS STREET.
Phillips street has been graded and a sidewalk built from Broad street, 200 feet.
PHILLIPS STREET EXTENSION.
Phillips street extension has been graded, and a sidewalk built on one side. The length of this street is 360 feet, and the length of sidewalk 250 feet.
WEBB STREET.
Webb street has been resurfaced 670 feet from Broad street to a point near Prospect street, and a 10-inch pipe drain laid across the easterly end, 35 feet in length.
FRONT STREET.
Front street has had 70 feet of 10-inch pipe put in, and 160 yards of paved gutter laid.
71
BROAD STREET.
Broad street in Ward 2, from Shaw's corner to a point 625 feet south, has had a stone foundation put in, and continuing in the same direction, 1,350 feet of gravel road has been resurfaced and the street has been worked some 10 feet wider. From Shaw's corner to Madison street, the street has been resurfaced both sides of the railroad track, while the remainder of the street has had considerable work done on it.
WASHBURN AVENUE.
Washburn avenue has had a sidewalk built on one side, and about 70 feet of curbstone set.
STATION STREET.
Station street has had between 600 and 700 feet of curbing furnished by B. & W. R. R. Co. of a fine quality, giving the street a fine appearance, and when properly graded will be one of the finest streets in town.
BRIDGE STREET.
Bridge street from North street to a point 300 feet east has been resurfaced with gravel, and from North street to a point 250 feet west a stone foundation has been put in and the curbstone at Torrey's shop raised and the sidewalk made safe for travel.
COMMERCIAL STREET.
Commercial street at Loud's hill has had a good coat of gravel put on, it having been badly washed last winter.
FENCES.
Fences have been built on Broad street, Ward 3, 70 feet ; Ward 2, 844 feet. A large amount of filling was required to fill out into the swamp near the estate of Mr. Cross, and also in front B. & W. R. R. houses in order to retain the fences.
STATE ROADS.
State roads at the Hingham end commenced to work about the 10th of August, and on September 3 work was begun on the Quincy point end.
72
DRAINS.
Drains have been put in, at or near Mr. Slattery's house, and carried across the street 64 feet. This is of 10 inch pipe, and I think it will take care of the water that has caused so much trouble. Several smaller drains have been laid, and in conclusion I wish to thank the members of the board for the kind and courteous way in which they have always treated me.
Yours respectfully,
THOMAS K. EAMES,
Superintendent.
