TOWN OF WAKEFIELD
ARTICLE 5
To see what action the town will take as to a general or flat rate in- crease in salaries of the town officers and employees for the year 1947 and raise and appropriate money therefor, or what they will do about it. - Finance Committee.
Motion by Finance Committee:
That the town vote, as a temporary measure, for the year 1947, to in- crease salaries and wages of town employees and officers, excluding school teachers otherwise provided for, and employees of any department where the Division of Civil Service fixes rates and salary increases; said increase to be effective as of January 1, 1947 on the basis of 10% of base rate, but no increase in any one case to exceed $250 per year, the necessary funds to be provided in the regular budget.
Amendment by William R. Lindsay, for the Selectmen:
That the town grant a $300.00 flat-rate increase in the salaries and wages of all regular officers and employees of the Town of Wakefield, ex- cept teachers who have otherwise been provided for, as of January 1, 1947, all part-time officials and employees to receive 15% increase, not to exceed $300.00.
The moderator called for a count of the vote.

Ed., said money to be used in conjunction with any money which may be allotted by the State or County, or both, for this purpose or take any other action in relation thereto. - Board of Selectmen.

That for the original construction of the following public ways, includ- ing land damages and the cost of pavement and sidewalks laid at the time of said construction, the sum of $6,000.00 be raised by taxation, and that the Treasurer with the approval of the Selectmen be, and hereby is author- ized to borrow the sum of $35,000.00 and issue bonds or notes of the town therefor, payable in annual installments within ten years from their date or at such earlier times as the Treasurer and Selectmen may determine, namely: Cristofaro Street, running easterly from Walden Road, approxi- mately 300 feet; Walden Road, running easterly from Main Street to Lowell Street, approximately 900 feet; Morel Circle approximately 955 feet; Crosby Road approximately 670 feet; Bellevue Avenue, running easterly from Preston Street, approximately 700 feet; Sherman Road approximately 410 feet; Line Road, running westerly from Main Street, approximately 1,175 feet; and Gerard Street, approximately 340 feet; and that the same be constructed under the Betterment Act.

In view of further action by the Selectmen since the previous meeting, and the preparation of a new motion by the board, Mr. Volpe withdrew his amendment.
The question then reverted to the original motion by Mr. Preston.
Mr. Preston offered the following substitute motion as an amendment to his original motion:
That for the original construction of any or all of the following public ways, including land damages and the cost of pavement and sidewalks laid at the time of said construction, the sum of $6,000.00 be raised by taxation, and that the Treasurer, with the approval of the Selectmen, be and hereby is authorized to borrow, the sum of $66,000.00 and issue bonds or notes of the town therefor, payable in annual installments within ten years from their date or at such earlier time as the Treasurer and Selectmen may de- termine, namely: Crosby Road, approximately 670 feet; Sherman Road, approximately 400 feet; Bellevue Avenue, approximately 700 feet; Line Road, approximately 1,100 feet; Sylvan Avenue, approximately 1,300 feet; Woodland Road, approximately 1,100 feet; Oakland Road, approximately 200 feet; Savin Road, approximately 300 feet; Ames Street, approximately 400 feet; Middle Street, approximately 310 feet; Minot Street, approximate- ly 350 feet; Gerard Street, approximately 340 feet; Perham Street, approx- imately 555 feet; Walden Road, approximately 900 feet; Cristofaro Street, approximately 300 feet; and Morel Circle, approximately 955 feet; and that the same be done under the Betterment Act.

Art. 20. To see if the town will raise and appropriate a sufficient sum of money to complete construction of cement sidewalks and curbing, a dis- tance of 593.5 feet, on the west side of Madison Avenue between Warren Avenue and Pitman Avenue. - Wilbur C. Aageson and Others.

Voted: That the town raise and appropriate $7,000.00 for the construc- tion of sidewalks on Madison Avenue, and on various other streets, and recommend that the Board of Selectmen have work on streets and side- walks done under private contract where found advisable, after advertising for bids.

To see if the town will authorize the Board of Selectmen to accept on behalf of the town, conveyances or easements from time to time, giving the town the right to slope land back from the street lines and to con- struct retaining walls. - Board of Selectmen.

Be it resolved: That the Board of Selectmen be requested to act fav- orably upon the plans submitted to the Board by the night officers for a seven-hour tour of duty for night officers in the Police Department. - Charles H. Sullivan and Others.

ARTICLE 23
To see if the town will vote to authorize the Highway Department to purchase new equipment consisting of one-half ton pick up truck; one heavy duty five ton truck; one snow plow complete for five ton truck, and raise and appropriate the sum of $10,000.00 therefor. - Board of Select- men.
