Report of the Librarian
FOR THE YEAR 1935
To the Trustees of the Millicent Library :
A business concern open 84 hours a week! Seldom one hears of such an organization. Twelve hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This is the service - 4,368 hours of it - which the Millicent Library gives each year to its patrons. The work of the library corresponds to that of the average business, and like many business establishments has a purchasing department where careful selection in buying is done, a stock department where items are checked and prepared for the trade, a sales promotion department if one cares to call it that, to sell the love and value of books, an information and service de- partment handling volumes of business for which purpose the library primarily functions.
In 1935, the stockholders of the Millicent Library were its 4,328 patrons, and each had the privilege of sharing equally in the profits. During the year, the holdings of the stockholders were 122,305 books of knowledge, books of fun and books of laughter. The average stockholder read 28 books, but the average resident of Fairhaven read but 11 books. The stockholders profited. Unlike the average business, the shares at the library are free for the asking, and anyone may become a stockholder. Yes, the library's business is a growing, thriving one, gaining new friends each year, building up a capital of goodwill through its willingness to give ever increasing service. The dissemination of knowledge - this is the library's business - helping those who wish to know how to raise chickens, aiding others concerned with the latest methods of air conditioning, instructing amateur gar- deners on the care of poinsettias and roses, suggesting to busy housewives new dishes for the family. That housewives are con- cerned with the latter is proved by the fact that five different cook- books circulated a total of 118 times in a three year period. New recipes must have been enjoyed in many households.
The Library is Waiting to Serve Every Citizen
It is hoped that the time will come when every citizen of Fairhaven will realize that the library is willing and waiting to serve each and every one - that it is not an organization for a favored few - that it seeks to serve one no more - no less -
6
than another under similar conditions, - that the members of the staff are not holding down easy jobs where there is nothing to do but to sit and read. To well meaning but unfortunately misinformed people who believe the latter, we might say that the staff of the up-to-date, small library, and we feel that the Millicent Library is such, must stand almost on their tiptoes to keep the volume of business moving. There is work to be done-plenty of it! In 1935, the library staff handed and received over the loan desk 244,610 books. Keeping these in presentable condition, preparing the ever constant flow of new books for cir- culation, doing the one hundred and one other things - this is the way the staff occupies its time. No, - the staff may not read even a small proportion of the new books during working hours, so great is the pressure of work.
While keeping in mind that the library is a business organiza- tion, it must also be remembered that it is first of all a pro- fessional institution where certain business methods are employed in order to render efficient professional service. In this vast storehouse of books, the library, people from all walks of life are invited to meet in search of knowledge and pleasurable reading.
A New Regulation
It should not seem strange that for the protection of each stockholder, new rules and regulations must be made from time to time. One such was made in 1935. Investigation proved that new fiction titles were reserved by so many within the first week or two after their appearance that they did not appear at all on the seven-day table for a number of weeks. This seemed un- fair to the majority. On April 1st, the plan went into effect of not accepting reserves on fiction until such titles had been in the library for a period of six weeks, and not permitting borrowers to have at one time more than three reserves on fiction titles. There have been practically no complaints to this change and the librarian and staff feel that more people are getting better service.
