Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

The discontinuance of the Flat Rock school for the Fall term and conveyance of the pupils to the South graded schools was attended with very good results to the children and quite a saving to the town. The same results however, could not have been reached during the winter, by a similar ar- rangement,

26

ANNUAL REPORT.

It may be thought by some that an assistant was provided for the So. Grammar because of the closing of the Flat Rock school. But this is not so. The teacher of the So. Grammar had planned work for her school which she could not successfully ac- complish without an assistant, and offered to have her wages reduced one dollar per week if the com- mittee would furnish her an assistant.

An assistant therefore was furnished who had experience in teaching, and by the reduction of the teacher's wages it cost the town only one dollar and a half per week for the assistance rendered. It was not thought best to provide any assistant for the school during the present term, but Miss Abby Vance volunteered her services free, deeming the experience she would secure a sufficient renumera- tion for the service rendered. The committee as well as the teacher are very grateful to her for her labors.

During the year, Death, ruthless, and "no re- spector of persons," entered the ranks of the School Board and snatched away (in the person of Miss Sarah W. Phillips) one of the most devoted mem- bers. Following are the Resolutions passed by the Board at a meeting held Nov. 12, 1889.

Respectfully submitted,

Jos. E. Sears, for the Committee.

27

ANNUAL REPORT.

Whereas, Almighty God, in His inscrutable Providence, has removed by death from the scene of her earthly activities, our friend and co-laborer, Sarah W. Phillips ; therefore,

Resolved, That we submissively bow to the Di- vine decree, and humbly invoke the comforts of om- nipotent grace upon the large circle of friends who mourn her loss.

Resolved, That in the death of Miss Phillips, the town has lost a valuable and intelligent advocate of the best educational methods, the school board an efficient member and faithful officer, and the home circle a tender and devoted daughter.

Resolved, That this inadequate testimonial of our high appreciation of the conscientious performance of the duties assigned to her as Secretary of this Board, and of our great regard for her beautiful Christian character, be placed upon our records.
