In the above financial report no mention is made of the incidental expenses of the schools since there seems to be no reason for putting them in any different form than that in which they appear in the treasurer's report.

ANNUAL REPORT.
The committee have endeavored to expend the money, both incidental and school, wisely; and the teachers have united with the committee in trying to secure as good surroundings as possible for the pupils. Indeed, several of our teachers have fur- nished from their own homes or pocket books the means for securing pleasanter rooms or more inter- esting studies. It has been and still is our aim to make our schoolrooms veritable workshops where thought which may be both pleasant and elevating shall be a constant factor.
If parents would visit the schools more, not for the purpose of ascertaining whether the work is done as it used to be, but whether it is well done ; trusting more to their own judgment and less to their childrens'; if, in short, they would go more by knowledge and less by hearsay, they would oftener fulfil the golden rule toward the teacher and so secure a much better condition of things in the schools.
Truancy and absenteeism have caused our truant officers to do more work than ever before and so made some expense for the town. The cost, however, is slight compared with the better attend- ance secured.
The incidental appropriation for the year, $600, although larger than ever before, will be barely enough to pay the back bills and meet the present year's expenses. But the amount of sup- plies on hand is somewhat larger than, at the close

of any previous year, and the repairs have been well cared for except at the Brick, where the inside of the house needs a thorough overhauling, for which a special appropriation might well be made.
The present year marks the possession of a school building, which, in all its appointments is superior to any building the town has ever owned. True, it is not perfect in every respect, but its compact walls, its pleasant rooms, its ventilating system, together with its slate blackboards (so superior to wood or plastering, and, we believe, cheaper in the end) make it by far the most pleasant building in the town.
So long as the number of pupils attending in that part of the town is as small as at present it would seem advisable to have but two schools there. The third room would therefore, perhaps to some, seem needless. But in the wisdom of building it will doubtless soon be demonstrated.
With the intermediate school closed since the burning of the house there, and the closing of the Flat Rock school, except during the spring term, there have been but nine schools in session the most of the school year, a fact which has served to keep down the total expense to a comparatively low fig- ure.
A few trees have been planted on the school grounds the past year and it is hoped that more may be planted another year. It would be especially

desirable to set out some on the grounds of the new house at the No. Village.
This year Grace N. Boomer and Fannie L. White were graduated from the Taunton High School and last August Mabel Haskins was approved to attend the Fall River High School and Bertha E. Atwood to attend the Taunton High School.
A close observer will notice that many so called good grammarians do not use good language. Why is this so ? One has well said, "He who depends upon his knowledge of grammar to help him through a speech, or even in his every-day conversation, will doubtless find that his thoughts, when they are seeking expression in words, are far from grammars and gramatical rules." Another says, "No one ever changed from a bad speaker to a good one by ap- plying the rules of grammar to what he said." Still another says, "It is only when week by week of his school life the pupil is learning and applying, having constantly in hand something to study and some- thing to write, that his mental needs are best met, and his progress best secured." Recognizing the truth of the above, the committee have changed the text book on language the past year and have put into the schools one of the latest, and as they trust, one of the best language books published. And it has been the aim of the Superintendent to have the teachers make every recitation a lesson in language by correcting the pupils when they use incorrect language, and encouraging complete statements in

correct language when answering questions. Par- ents might very materially aid in forming correct habits in the use of language by their children if they would, as far as they know, exercise themselves in the expressions they use, and allow proper crit- icisms, for this purpose, between themselves and their children.
For some time it has seemed to us that good results have not been reached by drawing books. And the experience of the past year has led us far toward the belief that we had better give them a second place. Mr. Henry T. Bailey, agent of the State Board of Education, had given our teachers iustruction in drawing from objects. The result is that those teachers who have taken up the work as outlined by Mr. Bailey have achieved a success which is very gratifying. Those teachers who, though not having been taught in this direction, study while they teach and give their best to their schools, find somewhere type forms, as broom han- dles sawed up or blocks, and their pupils are taught to judge the proportions of and draw windows, doors, chairs and other objects in the room, as well as fruits, leaves and other things outside the room. Nature studies have aided much in this drawing from objects and it is very gratifying to go into a school and find a collection of blocks of the different kinds of wood, or a collection of little branches of the different kinds of evergreens, or a collection of the different kinds of flowers or leaves, all of which

through study, and especially by attempt to picture by drawing as Mr. Bailey well says, "Lead children to see the perfect order and subtile proportions of their related parts, and to discover and love the marvellous beauty with which God has clothed the grass of the field and the tender herb."
By thus combining nature study with the object drawing much better results 'are secured than for- merly, and drawing becomes a means for expressing ideas which will help very materially in forming good judgment in the pupil, and at the same time make the mind more susceptible to beauty, deepen the love for nature and art, awaken ideas, and de- velop the power to express them.
In submitting this report for public considera- tion we trust that it may awaken new zeal, arouse more careful thought on the part of parents con- cerning their children and bring about a more marked co-operation of parent, teacher and commit- tee in securing the best results possible for our schools.
Respectfully submitted, JOSEPH E. SEARS,
For the Committee.
