of cemetery lots and a fund established for the benefit of private individuals have been examined and found to be intact, all income having been accounted for, all expenditure properly vouched. The Collector has paid over to the Town Treasurer all money collected, and the outstanding taxes have been verified by a notice sent postpaid to each delinquent stating amount of tax due and a request that the Town Auditor be notified at once if not correct.


The accounts of the Board of Public Welfare, the Public Library, the Sealer of Weights and Measures, and the figures used by the Assessors in computing the Town tax have been examined and verified and found to be correct.

TOWN CLERK'S REPORT


The regular Annual Town Meeting was held on March 3, 1924 Charles S. Chase, was elected moderator.


Lucy Paul Morse and Henry E. Williams were acting as Tellers with William E. Walker, Hazel I. Bullard and Rose E. Bolger as ballot clerks, Lucy Paul Morse acting as moder- ator pro-tem in the absence of Mr. Chase.

Voted that all unexpended balances be reappropriated to be used by the department for which it was originally in- tended and that all receipts by the Treasurer reimbursing any department be appropriated and used by the depart- ment in which it belongs.


Voted that compensation for labor on highways be $7.00 per day for pair of horses and man and $3.00 per day for a man.


Voted that compensation of town officers be same as last year. Vote to grant to the Collector of Taxes the same powers in collection now held by a treasurer.

Voted that the treasurer with the approval of the Select- men be and is hereby authorized to borrow money from time to time in anticipation of the revenue of the town of the financial year beginning Jan. 11, 1924 and to issue a note or notes therefor payable within 1 year, any debt or debts incurred under this vote to be paid from the revenue of said financial year.


Voted that all town officers to be bonded are to be bonded by the Massachusetts Bonding Co. !


Voted that the Selectmen confer with the selectmen of Swansea and the Dept. of Public Works in regard to a through macadam road from Taunton to Fall River via Williams Street and Swansea.


Mr. George H. Gilbert made a verbal report in regard to town Forestry which was accepted as a report of progress, and the Committee was requested to make a further report at the next Annual Town Meeting.


Voted to accept the provisions of Chapter 26, Acts of 1923 and change the name of the Overseers of Poor to Dept. of Public Works.


Voted that the School Committee hold hearings in the several outlying School Districts in order to get the opinion of the residents as to the advisability of closing the rural schools "so called" and transporting the scholars where they would receive the benefit of graded schools.


Voted to accept the report of the town officers as printed.


At the adjourned town meeting it was voted to establish a Town forest of not less than 100 acres under Chapter 45 of the General Laws and any amendment thereof.


Voted to appropriate $1,000.00 to be taken from the bal- ance in Treasury, Jan. 1st, 1924 to be expended by the Committee consisting of Geo. H. Gilbert, J. Harvey Briggs and Dwight F. Lane in the purchase of land and starting said town forest.

At a Special town meeting held May 1st, 1924 it was voted that the Selectmen be authorized in behalf of the Town to relinquish its rights to take any contract to construct any state highway as provided in Chapter 81, Section 8.


At the Special Meeting adjourned from May 1st, 1924 held May 15th, it was voted that the selectmen in behalf of the Town be authorized to indemnify and save harmless the Commonwealth against all claims and demands for damage which may be sustained by any person whose land has been taken for or injured by the taking of land for the construction of a state highway in the south part of the Town agreeable to the plans on file with the selectmen.


At a special meeting held June 3, 1924 it was voted that the vote passed at a special meeting May 15 shall be amend- ed to read as follows:


That the Selectmen in behalf of the Town be authorized to indemnify and save harmless the commonwealth against

any and all claims and demands for damages which may be sustained by any person whose property may be taken or may be injured by the layout or alteration of any highway which the Department of Public Works, Division of High- ways, may layout and construct or alter as a State Highway in the south part of the Town, substantially agreeable to plans on file with the Board of Selectmen, a unanimous vote.


At a special Town Meeting held Aug 15th, 1924. The Selectmen reported as follows:


The Selectmen with Mr. Wade the adjuster of claims of the Dept. of Public Works have made an appraisal of the damage and injury to the owners and occupants of land taken for the State Highway in the south part of the Town.


There are 32 owners. Two cases pending. Five have refused the award. 23 owners have accepted the award.

Voted to accept report of Selectmen as read.


Voted that for payment of damages caused by the layout of the State Highway in the south part of the town by the Dept. of Public Works, Division of Highways, that the treasurer with the approval of the selectmen is hereby authorized to borrow ten thousand dollars to meet the claims of persons whose property is damaged thereby and to issue the note or notes of the Town therefor, said note or notes to be paid Aug. 1st, 1925. A unanimous vote.

At a special meeting held on Nov. 6, 1924.


It was voted to sell the fishing provileges at public auction and they were sold by the Moderator at public auction to, one to Howard C. Briggs for fifty cents and one to Dwight F. Lane for fifty cents.


Voted that the Selectmen call a conference of the select- men of towns and mayors of cities interested in the present law in regard to fishing in Taunton River and report at an adjourned meeting.


At a special meeting held Dec. 4, 1924 it was voted to instruct the Selectmen to order paid all bills of the Highway Department to meet the emergency demands from un- expended balances now in hands of the Treasurer to the amount of two thousand dollars.
