REPORT OF THE TOWN NURSE

To the Board of Health

Gentlemen :

I have the honor to present a report as community nurse for the year 1927. We have been very fortunate in having no epidemics and very few contagious diseases in the past year. The larger part of the work of community nurse in this Town is done for the school children. Mothers have been visited, advised and shown a safe and sane way to safeguard the health of their children to prevent many minor things becoming serious. This year with the excep- tion of whooping cough no contagious diseases was spread outside of the individual family where it started. This shows the care that is being taken. Mothers and teachers are doing all they can to be ever watchful and they show clearly that they heartily believe the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

The following is the report of cases and visits:

"The language of books is an intimate language, and cul- ture thrives in quiet lanes and silent corners." We feel the record of the past year shows to a marked degree a steady growth in the usefulness of the Library to all parts of the community. We think that the Library is better known to a much wider circle of townspeople. We have a new book stack with a capacity for a thousand books. The shelves are more than half filled making the fact evident that it was much needed. About forty pupils of the South School are taking the State Reading course, two of them

having received the Honor Certificate. In May, Mrs. M. F. Walkers class of 1925-1926 presented the Library with a picture, The Madonna by Bodenhausen and a book, King Arthur and his Knights. Mr. Byron Rose of North At- tleboro presented ten books on Spiritualism. We have a collection of books for the Portuguese residents. This is loaned us by the Library Commission and is exchanged when occasion demands. "Books contain not only the priceless records of the past but they are to a large extent the hope of the future. By means of them we have re- vealed to us the inventions and discoveries of science, the beauty of poetry and the imperishable thoughts of the master minds of all ages."
